The Opportunity

As the Controller
, you will play a critical leadership role in supporting the financial integrity and sustainability of The Family Conservancy (TFC). Reporting to the Vice President of Finance, you will oversee day-to-day accounting operations, ensure accurate financial reporting, maintain internal controls, and support compliance with nonprofit regulations and grant requirements. This is an opportunity for a detail-oriented and mission-driven financial professional to contribute to the long-term fiscal health of a dynamic, impact-focused organization.

Team Structure & Direct Reports

As Controller, you will be a key member of the Finance Department, reporting directly to the Vice President of Finance. You will oversee a team of 6-7 accounting professionals, including staff responsible for accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger management. You will provide day-to-day leadership, ensure adherence to accounting standards, and foster a culture of accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement within the team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare timely and accurate monthly financial statements, schedules, and supporting worksheets in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Supervise all core accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger activity, and balance sheet reconciliations to maintain the accuracy and integrity of financial records.
  • Ensure full compliance with all funding source requirements, including federal grants such as Head Start, through the accurate maintenance of grant and contract financial information.
  • Manage the invoicing process to ensure timely and accurate submission of monthly and quarterly invoices to funders and maintain organizational cash flow.
  • Recommend and implement improvements to internal accounting controls to ensure ongoing GAAP compliance and strengthen financial operations.
  • Oversee the analysis of balance sheet accounts, including cash, bank statements, investment and endowment funds, receivables, and payables.
  • Supervise accounts payable processes to ensure proper selection and posting of invoices to the general ledger and ensure timely payments.
  • Ensure accurate and compliant government reporting, including annual preparation and submission of 1099s and 1096 transmittal forms to the IRS.
  • Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with the Vice President of Finance and program leaders, including preparation of agency-wide and Head Start program budgets.
  • Serve as the primary liaison to external auditors by coordinating audit requests and preparing necessary documentation, schedules, and journal entries.
  • Provide financial coaching and support to program leadership, including assistance with budget development, financial review, and problem-solving.
