Compensation Range

Hourly: $20.90 - $26.90 (Amount based on relevant experience, skills, and competencies.)

As a Payment Specialist you’ll be responsible for meeting critical deadlines in the department to make sure important files are delivered to and received from the appropriate systems in a timely manner. You’ll also work with Commercial Customer Support and Treasury Services to respond to customer inquiries and help to resolve any problems.

About This Job

The main purpose of this job is process, manage, and ensure the accuracy, timeliness, and compliance of payment transactions. This role supports Commerce Bank’s daily operations by performing payment processing tasks, resolving payment‑related issues, maintaining accurate records, and delivering exceptional customer service.

Work Schedule
  • Monday - Friday 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Essential Functions
  • Process department files prepared for payment processing
  • Receive, organize, and process customer and interbank payments, including ACH, wire transfers, instant payments, electronic funds
  • Post payment transactions in banking systems and verify proper allocation of funds to ensure timely and compliant processing
  • Execute daily processing procedures, including balancing, reconciling, and posting transactions
  • Monitor payment queues and escalate exceptions or errors for timely resolution
  • Ensure critical deadlines are met and all files are delivered or received in a timely manner
  • Research, analyze, and resolve payment discrepancies and exceptions
  • Maintain compliance with bank policies, industry standards, and regulatory requirement
  • Maintain accurate documentation and audit trails within payment systems
  • Provide support and guidance to internal teams and customers regarding payment inquiries and issues
  • Collaborate with internal teams, such as banks operations support and product teams to streamline payment processes
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required
  • Basic knowledge of bank operations
  • Ability to communicate effectively with correspondent banks and external partners as required
  • Ability to apply analytical and problem‑solving skills to identify and recommend improvements to payment workflows and minimize errors
  • Ability to stay current with payment processing systems, technologies, and regulatory changes
  • Motivated and organized self‑starter with strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Inquisitive, agile and strong team player with excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to remain adaptable and resilient to all situations with an optimistic outlook and cast a positive shadow that is aligned with our culture and Core Values
  • Intermediate level proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
Education & Experience
  • High School Diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience required. Associates degree preferred
  • 1+ year banking operations experience required
