Position Summary / Career InterestShift: Weds, Fri., Sat. Days- 7am - 7:30pm
The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer utilizes high‑frequency sound waves (diagnostic ultrasound) along with color and spectral Doppler ultrasound to assist in the diagnosis of a variety of conditions and diseases. The sonographer is responsible for producing dynamic and static visual images of internal structures, analysing hemodynamics of vasculature, and communicating findings to the interpreting radiologist.
- Perform clinical assessment and diagnostic sonography examinations, using cognitive sonographic skills to identify, document, and adapt examinations as appropriate to anatomical, pathological, and diagnostic information and images; use independent judgment during the sonographic exam to accurately differentiate between normal and pathologic findings and communicate findings to the interpreting radiologist.
- Assume responsibility for the safety, mental, and physical comfort of patients.
- Introduce self to patient, properly identify patient using two identifiers, explain the sonographic examination being performed, and answer any patient questions; assume responsibility for the safety and comfort of the patient while they are in the sonographer’s care; notify appropriate personnel if assistance is needed.
- Select and operate a wide variety of imaging equipment efficiently and safely, coordinate examinations in the most efficient order, and perform exams in a sequence that minimizes the patient’s stay in the hospital.
- Maintain working order of the equipment and complete daily and weekly quality control as required; report equipment malfunctions to the supervisor promptly.
- Interact with physicians and other technical staff to provide quality, safe, and efficient care for the patient.
- Maintain cleanliness and supply par levels of all rotational areas, empty laundry, follow eye‑wash station protocol and policy, and utilize high‑level disinfection (HLD) according to health system policy directed by Cleaning, Disinfection, and Sterilization policy.
- Provide instruction to sonography technical students, medical students, and residents regarding sonography exams and equipment when appropriate; coordinate with ancillary personnel as needed.
- Assist supervisor with divisional paperwork as assigned.
- Fulfill mandatory educational assignments as provided by the supervisor.
- Must be able to perform the professional, clinical, and/or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Education and Experience
- High School Graduate
- Graduate of a formal Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program that meets the requirements of the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers
Education and Experience
- 1 or more years experience as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer/Vascular Technologist with the RDMS and RVT credentials
- Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) – American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS); employee must obtain RDMS (Specialty ABD or OB/GYN) credentials within 90 days and has an additional three months (six months from date of position) to obtain RVT credentials to remain employed by the University of Kansas Health System within 180 days.
- Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) – American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS); employee must obtain RVT credentials within 90 days and has an additional three months (six months from date of position) to obtain RDMS (AB or OB/GYN) credentials to remain employed by the University of Kansas Health System within 180 days.
- Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS or BCLS) – American Heart Association (AHA)
- Registered Vascular Specialist (RVS) – Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI); equivalent to Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT)
- Sonography (S) – American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)
