Job Description
Summary:
Responsible for performing organic reactions in Dr. Sielecki's lab within the Institute of Advancing Medical Innovation and the Department of Cancer Biology. Post‑docs will learn methods appropriate to the field, develop grant‑writing skills, and complete an original research project in preparation for independent careers.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Work with a PI/faculty mentor to develop and perform synthesis of multiple small‑molecule platforms in collaboration with principal investigators at KUMC, KUCC and other research institutes and companies.
- Use bench experiments, cell culture and, eventually, animal studies to investigate novel mechanisms of cancer development, progression, and therapeutic sensitivity/resistance.
- Complete research projects, record and interpret results, prepare publication‑quality manuscripts, and publish in peer‑reviewed literature.
- Read literature; develop new ideas; design retrosynthetic analyses; convert to real‑world synthetic methods.
- Assist in designing animal experiments with rodents.
- Interact regularly with faculty mentor and lab members to discuss experimental design and interpretation of results.
- Present research at departmental seminars and scientific meetings; write and publish results as first author in abstracts, manuscripts, and posters.
- Submit fellowship applications to bolster research funding and CV building.
- Interact with KU Cancer Center donors and local cancer affiliates.
Attend and maintain compliance on all orientation and training sessions designated by the University and the Cancer Biology Department; understand and follow IACUC and biosafety protocols; attend departmental seminars and regular lab meetings.
Required Qualifications- PhD (or equivalent) in Organic or Medicinal Chemistry.
- Basic bench and research experience with small‑molecule synthesis and nanomedicine.
- Experience serving as the lead on a research project.
- Communication and presentation skills.
- Analytical and innovative thinking.
- Interpersonal and leadership skills.

- Broad understanding of small‑molecule synthesis and nanomedicine.

Salary range: $58,656.00 – $80,000.00. Minimum: $58,656.00. Midpoint: $69,328.00. Maximum: $80,000.00.
