Job Description

The Automation & Controls Engineer executes automation and controls engineering design activities for projects in food, consumer products, pharmaceutical, life science, aerospace, and industrial facilities. Responsible for delivering automation and controls solutions throughout all project phases, from front end to start-up. Projects vary from controls projects directly for clients to full-scale EPC projects.

  • Ensure compliance with safety policies.
  • Collaborate with a team of engineers, specialists, and designers, interfacing with project managers, electrical, controls, estimating, procurement, and construction teams.
  • Develop software design deliverables, including PLC and HMI programming, Batch, MES, servers, and virtualization, and oversee commissioning and startup.
  • Create controls design documents such as instrument lists, I/O lists, narratives, panel and hardware designs, and installation plans.
  • Develop electrical design deliverables for equipment and motor power, installation drawings, and conductor schedules.
  • Define specifications for control panels and equipment, track vendors, and lead FATs.
  • Experience with process instrumentation and control valve technologies.
  • Review P&IDs and collaborate with process engineers on controls scope.
  • Prepare design verifications, calculations, and reports.
  • Coordinate with offsite design offices and track departmental work.
  • Perform quality reviews of design submittals.
  • Apply automation engineering principles, codes, and procedures.
  • Work with construction teams on contracts and execution.
  • Monitor design efforts against budgets and timelines.
  • Build and maintain client and vendor relationships.
  • Guide less experienced team members.
  • Resolve installation issues on-site, including testing and inspections.
  • Lead onsite start-up and commissioning activities.
  • Manage change notices and understand EPC project execution.
  • Travel approximately 30% for site surveys and support.
  • Develop client relationships and contribute to sales strategies.
  • Participate in developing standards and mentoring early career staff.
  • Assist in creating engineering estimates and proposals.
  • Coordinate workload with department management.
  • Adhere to company policies and perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Controls, Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical Engineering or related from an ABET-accredited program; FE exam completed; 3+ years electrical engineering experience; EPC and automation experience preferred.
  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering and 4+ years experience; EPC experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical design standards (ANSI, IEEE), engineering techniques, and Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Experience leading discipline design for large projects and delegating tasks.
  • Critical thinking, analytical skills, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to review engineering documents and travel as needed.
  • Must obtain a TWIC card; PE license preferred.
Preferred Skills
  • Ability to develop innovative solutions and perform quality reviews.
  • Knowledge of automation standards (NFPA, ISA, IEC, IEEE, ISA/IEC 61511, ISO
    13849, UL508A).
  • Experience with control systems (PLC, SCADA, SIS, BMS, DCS) and specific platforms (Rockwell, Siemens, GE, Modicon, etc.).
  • SCADA and MES experience, safety system design, and familiarity with tools like SISTEMA, CCW, IAB, Batch

This position requires travel (~30%) and compliance with all policies. The role is full-time, based in Kansas City, with multiple location options. The posting remains open until filled.
