Summary & Nature of WorkThe Operating Engineer is responsible for inspecting, testing and performing Operations & Maintenance (O&M) preventative maintenance inspections on mechanical, electrical and automatic temperature control equipment utilizing results‑oriented strategies to ensure continuing operation. Some judgment is necessary to determine when assistance is needed. The incumbent directly contributes to the success of the company by maintaining the facility through preventative maintenance and assigned maintenance tasks.
EssentialDuties
- Operate and maintain stationary engines and equipment such as boilers, air compressors, generators, chillers and air handlers.
- Inspect and diagnose mechanical and electrical systems using a variety of tools and instruments.
- Performs specified preventative maintenance including belt adjustments, oiling, greasing and cleaning of equipment.
- Perform prescribed non‑destructive tests; collect and deliver samples for analysis.
- Records data (temperature, hours of operation, fuel consumption, water levels, etc.), reading dials, gauges and manuals.
- Document all work performed in the CMMS system.
- Communicate with the vendor, or the vendor's representative, on the work performed and present status of the mechanical system.
- Interpret engineering drawings in reference to layout, location and operation of the system(s).
- Ability to oversee and work on utility distribution equipment and as needed.
- Respond to identified customer needs.
- Performs all work in accordance with established code and safety procedures.
- All other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must have a minimum of 3-5 years' experience as an Operating Engineer.
- Intermediate level of knowledge on HVAC, plumbing and electrical equipment.
- Must have a CFC Universal certification for safe handling of refrigerants, or be able to obtain one within 90 days of award.
- Must have a valid Class E or higher Driver's License. Driving may be a requirement of this position. If so, an acceptable DMV record is required.
- Good computer and tablet skills required.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and engineering drawings.
- Previous customer service skills.
- Annual flu vaccination or medical proof of flu vaccine allergy is required.
Education and Experience
- Technical degree in HVAC, electrical, plumbing, electrical or related field.
- Advanced certifications in mechanical or electrical systems.
- Experience with CMMS systems.
- Strong mathematical skills including construction/engineering mathematics.
Must be able to satisfactorily pass a criminal background check and drug screen as required by facility policies.
