The Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy PGY1 Community‑Based Pharmacy Residency Program prepares community‑based pharmacists to develop, provide, and advance patient care services for patients with complex specialty disease states. Graduates are highly sought for their advanced skill set in managing patients holistically and for their experience in developing patient‑centered services in a specialty environment.
The program is conducted across four Walgreens Specialty Pharmacies and one ambulatory care clinic in Kansas City, Missouri, offering a variety of innovative clinical pharmacy services. Residents gain experience in disease‑state management, medication‑therapy management, specialty medication monitoring, direct bedside consultations, pharmacist‑administered immunizations, health‑and‑wellness program development, and community outreach.
Resident Activities- Disease‑state management in HIV/AIDS, oncology, transplantation, hepatitis C, and other specialty disease states
- Medication therapy management with an ongoing patient load of approximately 40 patients
- Specialty medication monitoring and follow‑up
- Direct bedside consultations
- Pharmacist‑administered immunizations
- Development of health and wellness programs
- Community outreach programs
- Design and conduct a practice‑based research project
- Write a business plan for a new or improved service
- Develop and conduct a continuous quality improvement project
- Draft a collaborative practice protocol
- Present research findings at regional and national professional meetings
- Execute marketing strategy to promote patient care services
- Provide clinical instruction to student pharmacists
- Participate in the UMKC Teaching Certificate Program
- Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited college or school of pharmacy
- Ability to obtain a pharmacist license within the state of residency by the licensure deadline
- Submission of residency application materials to Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Service (PhORCAS)
- Adherence to the rules of the ASHP Resident Matching Program
- Certified immunizer or willingness to become an immunizer within 90 days of hire
- Arrest and conviction records are considered for qualified applicants
