  • Full Time

Essential Functions
  • Facilitate patient flow
  • Assist the doctor in preliminary testing
  • Verify medical and vision insurances
  • Communicate effectively with patients, doctors, and managers
  • Answer inquiries via phone, email, and in‑person requests
Summary

As an Ophthalmic Technician, you are a vital asset to an ophthalmologist, assisting in delivering excellent patient care. You will handle a broad range of duties and use equipment for initial testing to prepare patients for examination.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide exceptional customer service during every patient encounter (in person or via phone)
  • Display a professional attitude, greet patients promptly, and thank them upon departure
  • Practice urgency regarding patient time, doctor’s time, and schedules
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures, including HIPAA
  • Verify patient information through interview
  • Record medical history, current medications, and visit purpose
  • Enter all data in the patient’s Electronic Medical Record (EMR)
  • Observe patient’s eyes for pupils, muscles, visual acuity, and extraocular movements
  • Perform diagnostic tests: dilation, refraction, intra‑ocular pressure, visual fields, OCT, GDX, IOL master, autorefractor, and topography
  • Demonstrate knowledge of eye anatomy, diseases, symptoms, and ocular medications
  • Perform general office duties and cleaning as assigned by manager

Education and/or Experience
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • One year of related experience/training, or equivalent combination of education and experience
Licenses and Credentials
  • Current Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) certification is preferred but not required
Systems and Technology
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook
Physical Requirements

This role requires frequent walking (75%), sitting (50%), and standing (50%), with regular bending, stooping, and reaching (25–50%). Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 25 lbs is essential. Strong fine motor skills and hand use are required for constant grasping, writing/typing, and technology use. Visual and auditory acuity—including color, depth, peripheral vision, and focus adjustment—are required 100% of the time.

Occasional driving or climbing may also be necessary.
