Senior Managing Director of Development - School of Science and Engineering, UMKC Foundation
Purpose: Reporting to an Assistant Vice President, the Senior Managing Director oversees the fundraising for the School of Science and Engineering. The Senior Managing Director leads the fundraising activities of the School in concert with the Dean, provides leadership, planning and management for the School of Science and Engineering development including facilitation, implementation and evaluation of strategic direction. The Senior Managing Director works closely with and provides management of the Director of Development for the School of Science and Engineering to ensure collaboration, support and strategic alignment of common goals for the school.
The Senior Managing Director also is responsible for managing a portfolio of major, planned, and principal gift donor prospects.
Organizational Relationships: The Senior Managing Director of Development has a dual reporting relationship to the Assistant Vice President and Dean of the School of Science and Engineering.
Essential Duties: The Senior Managing Director leads and participates in a comprehensive major and principal gifts program as well as planned gifts for the UMKC School of Science and Engineering. His/her time is spent both as a fundraiser and as a key manager.
- Facilitating active relationships with assigned prospects while endeavoring to match UMKC’s funding needs with prospects’ interests.
- Leading by example in personal work with donors; identifying, cultivating and qualifying prospects; soliciting and closing major gifts sufficient to meet or exceed individual and team goals set annually.
- Working with prospect research staff to evaluate and prioritize donor prospects and maintain a balanced portfolio and develop written strategies, including target amounts and target dates on all actively managed prospects.
- Collaborating with the Leadership Team to develop and implement an overall strategic plan for the solicitation of major gifts to meet the Foundation’s goals.
Managerial Duties: Leading, mentoring and supervising a Director of Development for the School of Science and Engineering. Engaging with the Director of Development to create a visionary strategic plan for the School and to inspire, motivate, and provide engaging leadership opportunities.
- Serve as the School’s expert on planned giving; works closely with Foundation staff to gain knowledge and expertise in gift planning.
- Works with direct report to establish and meet individual and team goals; conducts performance evaluations annually.
- Promotes team dynamic within the Foundation and collaborates with other schools, colleges and UMKC Advancement staff.
- Works closely and collaboratively with UMKC, Foundation and Advancement operations staff to assure operational needs are met and support fundraising efforts and promote donor satisfaction.
- Recommends changes in policies, systems and procedures to enhance efficiency and productivity that could assist in fundraising performance.
- Meets with Dean and Development Director to further fundraising performance and make suggestions and encourage partnership in meeting objectives and goals.
Education and Experience: A bachelor’s degree and at least six years of development experience are required. Preferred experience includes fundraising management, major gift solicitations and planned gift solicitations in the higher education environment, knowledge of corporate and foundation donors; experience building and executing campaigns and familiarity with the characteristics of a comprehensive university.

Major gifts moves management, planned giving vehicles, annual giving, corporate and foundation granting, administrative principles, budget development and administration, techniques for managing and motivating a variety of individuals, and principles for preparing effective written materials. Leadership, planning, organizing and directing the work of others.
Salary Range: $110,000 - $120,000 per year, commensurate with education, experience, and internal equity.
Work Status: Full Time, benefit eligible staff position with UMKC Foundation. Flexible schedules and telework arrangements will be available. A valid U.S. driver’s license is required. Frequent travel and evening/weekend work are necessary.
