Purpose Of Job

Working with diverse security staff and other school staff utilizing the equipment and technology in the Integrated security systems and adhering to established safety procedures and protocols to protect the students, staff, equipment, and facilities of the Kansas City Public Schools District. The patrol officer’s actions cannot be intolerably harsh and rigid when enforcing the safety policies, procedures, and protocols. The patrol officers must always have respect and regard for the students and staff’s emotional and social well-being.

Job duties require continued readiness to respond to situations within specified departmental procedures that may be life-threatening or harmful, including exposure to dangerous chemicals or other toxic substances, infectious diseases, fire, gunshots, physical confrontations, etc. Duties are performed as assigned in all weather conditions and on any shift (day or night). Conduct foot patrols (monitor) inside and outside assigned schools.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • General duties consist of preserving the peace, protecting District property, preventing criminal acts, apprehension of violators, enforcement of District policies, enforcement of the Student Handbook, and adherence to the policies and procedures contained in the Security Department’s Operations Manual.
  • The patrol officer shall be under the direct supervision of the first line security patrol supervisor to whose area they are assigned. The patrol officer shall perform all duties prescribed by the first line security patrol supervisor and security director (or designee).
  • Duties are performed as assigned in all weather conditions and on any shift (day or night). Must be able to work any shift as assigned with the understanding that the Security Department has a 24-hour responsibility to protect the students, staff, equipment, and facilities of the Kansas City Public Schools District.
  • If assigned to a school environment, the patrol officer shall act under the direction of the school’s principal for day-to-day activities. However, the patrol officer will remain under the management control of the Safety & Security Department.
  • If assigned to the Central Office Building, the patrol officer will be under the direct supervision of their first line patrol supervisor or the safety & security director (or designee).
  • Must remain professional and objective in all situations. Exercise sound judgment while under stress.
  • Must be able to react to situations utilizing appropriate levels of force as required and within the Security Department and District Wide level of force options.
  • Must communicate verbally, in body language, and writing.
  • Reports must be clear, concise, and complete with minimal spelling and grammar errors.
  • Shall be familiar with all district policies and administrative directives that affect the operation of the Security Department.
  • Shall familiarize themselves with federal & state laws and city ordinances as they apply to the School District.
  • Attend all in-service training, as may be required by the security department management.
  • Shall accept transfers to different assignments in the district’s best interest.
  • Responsible for maintaining and cleaning department-issued equipment and assigned vehicles.
  • Shall be responsible for answering calls for service routed from the dispatcher communication center via district-issued cell phones, hand-held radios, mobile base station radios, and other modes of communication.
  • Initiate contact with and maintain a good working relationship with other law enforcement agencies and security organizations during their job performance.
