Job Description

What You'll DoPatrol
Activities:
- Provides proactive deterrence and high visibility patrols of all university property by vehicle, foot, and/or bicycle with a community policing philosophy to ensure safety and prevent crime.
- Respond to emergency calls and distress signals in a timely and professional manner.
- Enforce traffic regulations and issue warnings or citations as necessary when violations occur.
Enforce Laws and Regulations:
- Stay current with evolving law enforcement best practices to uphold and enforce local, state, and federal laws, ensuring public safety and order.
- Exercises discretion in a safe, fair, and balanced manner.
- Performs arrests, issues citations, issues written or verbal warnings when appropriate, and ensures accurate data collection and reporting of incidents.
Maintain Public Safety:
- Monitor public areas on campus to prevent criminal activity and disturbances.
- Check buildings and property in accordance with established security procedures.
- Lock entryways and points of access as scheduled.
- Assist in parking patrol activities, including issuing citations and ordering vehicle removals.
Investigate Crimes and Incidents:
- Conduct preliminary investigations as necessary, including gathering evidence and documenting incidents.
- Interview victims, witnesses, and suspects and prepare detailed reports for follow-up and prosecution.
- Provide reliable and accurate testimony to assist in prosecution of criminal cases.
Community Law Enforcement
Activities:
- Collaborate daily with city police and criminal justice partners to ensure coordinated law enforcement efforts within the shared jurisdictional area.

Standard
Hours:
- 8-hour shifts across three rotating schedules:
Days (7am-3pm), Evenings (3pm-11pm), and Midnights (11pm-7am). Patrol schedules for UMKC PD are currently under review and are anticipated to change. - Overtime may be available/required for shift coverage, special events, and/or campus emergencies as needed.
Essential Personnel Requirements:
- As an essential university employee, may be required to work during weekends, university holidays, campus closures, severe weather events, and other emergency situations as operational needs dictate.
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid driver's license
- Must obtain and maintain Missouri Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification in accordance with current state requirements. Certification may be required prior to appointment and is mandatory once employed.
- Prior experience as a full-time certified peace officer
- Experience in higher education or campus law enforcement operations
- Prior military service
- Post-secondary training or education
