Position: Traffic Signal and Lighting Technician - 6:30AM-3PM/ 3:30PM-12AM

Traffic Signal and Lighting Technician

Shift

Hours:

6:30AM-3:00PM or 3:30PM-12:00AM. 2nd shift includes an additional $1/hr.

Location: 9101 E 40th Terrace, Kansas City, MO 64133.

Note for internal applicants: Successful candidates already at rates above the posted salary will be evaluated on an individual basis to determine final salary outcome.

Three pay levels based on knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Entry, Intermediate ($52,511.52), Senior ($56,712.48).

The traffic signal and lighting technician performs duties related to the installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signals, roadway lighting, communications equipment, and other electronic devices. Responsibilities are performed under direct supervision.

What You’ll Do
  • Assist on emergency calls, such as malfunctioning equipment and traffic crashes involving equipment for signals, lighting, ITS, aviation and navigational lighting, and communication systems, and take appropriate action.
  • Assist in the investigation of customer service reports regarding signal and lighting operations and other electronic/electrical traffic control devices, and report findings.
  • Respond to routine utility locate requests from Missouri One Call.
  • Assist in the installation, repair, and maintenance of traffic signal equipment, radio communication equipment, ITS, roadway, aviation and navigational lighting, and other electronic/electrical traffic control devices.
  • Assist in the interpretation of signal circuit plans and schematics for troubleshooting problems with electronic/electrical components.
Minimum Qualifications

All you need for success:

  • High School Diploma or GED/HiSET and completion of a formal post‑secondary technical training program in electrical, electronics, or networking (at least 30 credit hours), or completion of both phases of the department’s traffic signal and lighting apprenticeship program (internal employees only), or one year of signal and lighting field experience.
  • A passing grade on the written portion of the commercial driver’s license (CDL) exam is required prior to hire date. Must pass the driving portion of the CDL exam with tanker endorsement, no air brake restrictions (Class B), and interstate status (either Excepted Interstate [EI] or Non‑Excepted Interstate [NI]) within 60 days after hire.
  • Successful completion of a work simulation examination and a medical‑physical examination.
Special Working Conditions
  • Job requires heavy physical exertion and effort, including moving materials by hand, operating hand tools, and performing stationary flagging.
  • Job requires exposure to physical hazards, health and safety risks, and/or adverse or otherwise undesirable characteristics in the environment.
  • Job requires exposure to working at heights requiring the use of fall protection and aerial boom equipment.
  • Job may require operation of vehicles to plow snow and spread ice control materials.
