Software Engineer Intern; C++

Cboe interns work with a variety of staff across multiple departments and have the opportunity to put their skills to work in their field of interest, while learning about Exchange technology and operations through our robust Options Institute courses.

The three main foundational pillars of our internship program are: develop, educate and network. We want to ensure each of our interns receive a real-world working experience that encourages academic, professional and personal growth.

Candidates should be versatile, eager and able to work in a fast‑paced, time‑sensitive financial and technical environment. To be eligible for this internship, applicants must be enrolled in a university or college program and should not be scheduled to graduate before December of the year in which the internship takes place. Our internship program runs from June to August and you will wrap up your internship with a final presentation and retreat.

The Real‑Time Intern will work closely with the Real‑Time Team as we design, develop, and support the Exchange trading system. We care deeply about system reliability, testability, recoverability, fault tolerance, throughput, and latency. We measure times in nanoseconds. Our engineers have a strong understanding of computer science fundamentals and software engineering. We are looking for like‑minded individuals to join us.

Working alongside our software development team to contribute to projects integral to our business. This position offers the opportunity to collaborate with experienced developers and fellow interns, providing hands‑on experience designing, implementing, and troubleshooting complex systems. You will gain practical experience writing production‑quality code as you work on a high‑throughput, low‑latency trading system in an Agile development environment.

• Must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in Computer Science or related field.
• Strong knowledge of data structures and algorithms.
• Experience with C++, or experience in another language with a strong desire to learn C++.
• Experience with Linux or UNIX-like operating systems.
• Self‑directed, self‑motivated. You’ll really stand out with:
• Knowledge of at least one scripting language (Python preferred).
• Experience with SQL.
• Knowledge of network programming fundamentals.
