Summary

Under supervision, runs and operates manual and CNC (Computer Numerical Controlled) Mill and Lathe to fabricate and build parts for customer and shop needs. Includes precision instrument makers who fabricate, modify, or repair mechanical instruments. Knowledge of mechanics, mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures.

Essential Functions
  • Performs all tasks in a safe and responsible manner and complies with company policies.
  • Determines the uses of personal protective equipment (PPE); identifies safety equipment and procedures related to safe work practices and surrounding environment.
  • Able to run and complete parts using the MRP Network.
  • Uses the MRP system to clock in and out of jobs upon set-up and completion, and has knowledge of MRP to look ahead on upcoming jobs and machine set‑up for mill and lathe.
  • Maintains and fills out quality sheets to verify part tolerances.
  • Can lift up to 50 pounds frequently.
  • Maintains industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures.
  • Confer with engineering, supervisory, and manufacturing personnel to exchange technical information.
  • Confer with numerical control programmers to check and ensure new programs or machinery will function properly and that output will meet specifications.
  • Calculates hole‑pattern layouts, threading information, inspects and controls quality, and programs CNC machines.
  • Helps plan a sequence for machining operations, aligns work pieces, uses work‑holding devices, jigs and fixtures, performs threading operations on lathes and mills, and performs other procedures such as I.D. boring and facing operations.
  • Learns metallurgical terms and definitions to understand the behavior and service of metals in industry, characteristics during heating, cooling, shaping, forming, and stress related to their mechanical properties of materials.
  • Can read and edit CNC lathe and mill programs accordingly to set‑up and machine output.
  • Manually adjusts mill and lathe offsets for tool wear and machine compensation when needed.
  • May perform other duties as assigned by management.

  • Prevents damage to complex machine tools through close attention and care.
