What We Can Achieve TogetherThe Smoky Valley Ranch Conservation Steward (Steward) works at Smoky Valley Ranch (SVR) located between Oakley and Scott City, in Logan County, Kansas. They will perform and participate in ranch operations, maintenance, management, and monitoring. This is a full‑time, entry‑level, seasonal position with a flexible duration of up to 6 months. Housing is provided. Payment is $16–20 per hour.
Responsibilities- Work with cattle and bison, attending daily to water, fencing, salt, and mineral.
- Organize and manage ranch inventory.
- Maintain preserve infrastructure, including roads, water systems, fences, and other facilities.
- Keep vehicles clean and in good working order.
- Carry out vegetation and other ecological monitoring and management activities as directed.
- Assist with prescribed burns under the direction of the designated burn boss.
- Perform various ranch work as directed.
- Work with outside entities (universities, extension, etc.) to advance management on SVR.
- Interact with visitors and maintain constructive, positive relationships on behalf of TNC.
- Resolve problems at the direction of the Ranch Manager or Rangeland Specialist.
- May require some travel outside Western Kansas (less than 10%) for events like staff retreats.
- Work under close or infrequent supervision.
- High school diploma or GED and at least 1 year of training or experience in a science‑related field or land management.
- Experience operating various types of equipment safely (trailer, lawn mower, chainsaw, tractor, ATV).
- Ability to obtain required licenses or certifications (First Aid, CPR, herbicide application).
- Experience working with cattle and ranching.
- Experience with fence construction and maintenance.
- Experience performing physical work under adverse conditions or inclement weather.
- Valid driver’s license and compliance with TNC Auto Safety Program.
Pay range: $16–20 per hour, depending on experience. The range applies only to U.S. candidates; other countries will have local rates.
