Responsibilities
  • Has the ability to organize and supervise a total sports program.
  • Has previous successful coaching experience in assigned sport. (Major sports)
  • The head coach must have substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport.
  • The head coach must serve as an appropriate role model for student athletes through his/her instructions and actions.
  • Reports to:

    The athletic director, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the high school principals.
  • Supervises:
    Advises, coordinates and supports a staff of high school assistant coaches and middle school coaches in conjunction with the athletic director and respective principal.
  • Job goal:
    Instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for individual and team success; promote socially acceptable character development, self-discipline, self-confidence, and pride of accomplishment; upgrade knowledge and skills through coaching clinics and related activities.
General and Administrative
  • Guides the athletic program in accordance with applicable policies and regulations; interprets state and league regulations for staff.
  • Understands the proper administrative line of command and refers requests or grievances through proper channels; aware of meetings requiring attendance.
Staff Responsibilities
  • Establishes the fundamental philosophy, skills and techniques to be taught by staff; designs conferences, clinics and staff meetings to ensure staff awareness of the overall program.
  • Trains and informs staff; encourages professional growth by promoting clinic attendance.
  • Delegates duties, supervises implementation and analyzes staff effectiveness at season's end; evaluates all assistants.
  • Maintains discipline, adjusts grievances and works to increase morale and cooperation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the athletic director/principal.
Administrative Duties
  • Assists the athletic director in scheduling, transportation, and requirements for tournaments and special events.
  • Ensures preparation to hold scheduled sport events or practices and adheres to facility times; coordinates with maintenance and school staff.
  • Provides documentation for state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent and eligibility.
  • Provides safeguards for maintenance and protection of equipment sites; advises on policy and procedural changes.
Student Responsibilities
  • Serves as a mentor to promote character traits such as trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
  • Monitors student-athletes’ grades and conduct; provides guidance and safeguards during practices and travel.
  • Gives training rules and sport regulations to athletes; initiates programs concerning injuries, medical attention and emergencies.
  • Completes paperwork on disabling athletic injuries within 24 hours; directs student managers and assists with discipline and eligibility decisions.
Finance And Equipment
  • Participates in budgeting with the athletic director; establishes equipment guidelines and operates within budget.
  • Responsible for equipment inventory, issuing, storing and reconditioning; ensures equipment is properly marked and maintained.
  • Ensures athletes access only authorized areas and maintains locker-room cleanliness and safety; secures doors, lights and locks when leaving.
Public Relations
  • Organizes preseason meetings with parents, coaches and players; promotes the sport within and outside the school.
  • Maintains good public relations with media, booster clubs, parents, officials and volunteers; communicates schedules and results.
