Appointment to begin on August 1, 2026, subject to position clearance and availability of funds. This position may be appointed as Program Director for the baccalaureate HIM program to lead CAHIIM accreditation and ongoing compliance.
The University of Hawai’i–West O’ahu (UHWO), a public, primarily undergraduate institution with a strong commitment to teaching excellence and Native Hawaiian-serving mission, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor of Health Information Management (HIM). The successful candidate will provide vision and academic leadership to ensure a vibrant and growing HIM program that supports workforce needs for the health care community;
seek and obtain the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management (CAHIIM) accreditation for the baccalaureate HIM degree, including all necessary assessments, self-study, and site‑visit preparations to support the accreditation process; oversee the hiring and onboarding of lecturers; design and implement program curricula, course schedules, and transfer pathways; establish PPE (professional practice experience) partnerships, facilitate an advisory board, and establish practices for continuous program improvement.
Director (PD) Eligibility and CAHIIM Leadership
Appointment as PD requires RHIA and at least a master’s degree and will include documented release time during candidacy/self-study/site‑visit periods and 1
-2 summer months of administrative assignment to ensure year‑round leadership. The PD role counts towards CAHIIM’s requirement for two full‑time HIM faculty.
- Provide program vision and academic leadership to ensure a vibrant, growing HIM program aligned with healthcare and workforce needs.
- Teach and develop undergraduate HIM courses in traditional, hybrid, and online modalities, ensuring alignment with CAHIIM professional curriculum content, standards, and quality.
- Lead CAHIIM accreditation for the HIM baccalaureate program, including assessment plan design and implementation, evidence collection, self-study authorship, site‑visit preparation, and ongoing compliance/continuous improvement.
- Design, implement, evaluate, and regularly update the HIM curriculum and course schedules to support student progression and timely graduation.
- Develop and maintain transfer pathways and articulation agreements (e.g., UH Community Colleges / Leeward CC HIT to UHWO HIM 2+2), including advising guides and accurate catalog/website language.
- Convene and facilitate the Program Advisory Board; integrate stakeholder/employer feedback into program improvements.
- Establish, evaluate, and expand practicum partnerships. Coordinate preceptor agreements, student placements, and site expectations.
- Recruit, hire, onboard, supervise, and mentor lecturers, supporting quality instruction, assessment, and pedagogy.
- Assist in the interpretation, modification, and implementation of policies and procedures consistent with university and program requirements.
- Plan and secure program resources (budget, space, technology/software, lab/learning resources) to achieve program goals.
- Develop and implement marketing and recruitment plans and materials in collaboration with campus partners.
- Participate in curriculum development, including creation of course materials and innovative instructional methods.
- Conduct scholarly and/or applied research related to teaching and the HIM profession; maintain professional currency and credentials.
