Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions)- Serves as liaison to the MNHS Division, faculty, and the Pre-Nursing pathway program to stay current with program requirements and convey accurate advising to students.
- Supports student success by providing proactive support services individually or in groups, including:
- Advising and consulting students on college experience, advocacy, student aid, enrollment, academic planning, concentration declaration, transfer evaluation, and billing.
- Advising students on educational objectives aligned with life/career goals and program planning.
- Ensuring course selection fulfills degree objectives based on transfer credits and using online tools (e.g., STAR).
- Communicating university matriculation and academic progress policies.
- Monitoring academic progress for satisfactory progress and financial aid eligibility.
- Outreach to students at risk of dropping out or not meeting thresholds.
- Designing, executing, and evaluating educational experiences to support persistence, including courses, workshops, and activities.
- Maintains and manages data on assigned students to evaluate advising impact, including:
- Analyzing student data for retention strategies.
- Preparing and presenting regular reports on effective and ineffective approaches.
- Collaborating with IT and staff on data collection, assessment, and storage methods.
- Exercises budgetary direction and accountability for delegated accounts, including:
- Reviewing monthly cash, encumbrance, and expenditure reports.
- Reporting budget variances to supervisors and staff.
- Monitoring purchasing decisions.
- Preparing fiscal paperwork for budget expenditure and revenue collection.
- Maintaining cash handling controls and internal fiscal integrity.
- Develops, interprets, implements, and revises policies and procedures for assigned programs, facilities, and services.
- Develops, interprets, and updates operational manuals in cooperation with others.
- Provides management skills and knowledge, including serving in the absence of a supervisor.
- Manages and directs admissions, advising, and operations related to Health Sciences and Pre-Nursing pathway advising.
- Provides leadership and oversight for recruitment, interviewing, selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of paraprofessional, intern/practicum, student assistant, and volunteer peer mentor staff.
- Participates as a member of national professional associations (e.g., National Academic Advising Association, American College Personnel Association).
- Serves on divisional and sectional teams, providing direction for projects and activities such as staff training, student transition, and success efforts.
- Serves on university-wide committees, planning efforts, and programs.
- Assumes other related duties as assigned.
- Possession of a baccalaureate degree in health sciences, education, social sciences, human development, social work, or related field, and 3 years of progressively responsible professional experience in academic advising, career advising, or academic success programs, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques in academic advising, academic success programs, and student support services.
- Considerable working knowledge of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations, and theories related to academic advising and student support services.
- Demonstrated ability to resolve complex problems through creative reasoning and logical analysis.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information clearly in writing, verbally, and through prepared reports and other materials.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations and team members.
- Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
- For supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and handle employee relations.
Minimum Qualifications
- Considerable knowledge of administrative and organizational processes related to operations, services, facilities, and programs.
- Demonstrated ability to facilitate groups and conduct presentations.
- Demonstrated ability in program development skills, especially in needs assessment, design, and evaluation.
- Ability to interpret and apply legal and policy provisions consistently.
- Ability to work outside of normally scheduled business hours, including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays as needed.
