Position: Experienced Telecom Fiber Optic Splicer (G)

Overview

Please note that this position is in Hawaii on the island of Oahu in the city of Kapolei. No relocation assistance is being offered.

Job Summary

The Experienced Telecom Fiber Optic Splicer will perform overhead and underground low-voltage line splicing and maintenance (fiber optic & copper cabling). Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, splicing, driving trucks, operating test equipment, loading and unloading material, climbing poles, and working from aerial personnel lift devices. Some of the basic functions of this position evolve into the below:

Essential Job Functions
  • Read and interpret design drawings, blueprints, and installation guides.
  • Splice Fiber Optic Cable, up to and including 3,456 fiber count by means of fusion splicing with heat shrink protection.
  • Perform mass (ribbon) or single (loose tube) splicing utilizing fusion splicing.
  • Operate core alignment machines when single strand fusion splicing is required.
  • Familiar with the installation of fiber sleeve, wipes, cable tags and tie wraps.
  • Manage the installation of conduit, risers, cable trays or cable ladders.
  • Ensure installations comply with applicable codes such as ANSI/TIA/EIA 588-B Commercial Building Telecommunication Cabling Standard, the National Electrical Safety Code, and other applicable local and national codes related to quality and safety.
  • Keep the company informed on the progress of the splicing portion of the project; communicate and coordinate with customer and company regarding safety, local code, and installation requirements.
  • Assist in proposal development and project preparation activities.
  • Complete site surveys to verify site construction diagrams, determine splicing materials, verify scope and extent of fiber optic installations; report findings to appropriate staff.
  • Ensure splicing and other fiber test equipment is maintained per manufacturer’s procedures or customer procedures.
  • Conduct OTDR and/or power measurement testing on fiber optic cable reels as needed to determine damage during transit.
  • Assist with development of project schedules and materials selection.
  • Accurately report status, material usage, and expenses.
  • Update customer prints, documentation, and facilitate document storage.
  • Assist in warehouse maintenance and inventory.
  • Responsible for general organization and cleanliness of the truck.
  • Stock the truck with material for the day’s job assignment.
  • Maintain safety for self and crew members; respond with sound judgment to unusual or hazardous circumstances.
  • Assist with recordkeeping and maintain a log of work assigned/performed (hours by category).
  • Represent TDX Corporation and BSEt, LLC in a manner conducive to good public relations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Must have a minimum of 2 years of Fiber Optic Fusion Splicing experience on mass and single fiber optic cable.
  • Experience in performing fusion splicing, fiber terminations, fiber dressing, fiber cleaning and OTDR testing.
  • High level understanding of fiber optic cable installation procedures such as overhead and underground installations via conduits/ducting.
  • Knowledge of terminology used in the telecommunications and fiber optic cable installation industry.
  • Demonstrated ability to use basic hand and power tools needed for installation projects.
  • Experience creating splice reports detailing the splice(s) and configurations of existing splices; comfortable working at heights up to 50 ft in a bucket truck.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Show up for work daily and on time.
  • Must be able to pass a background check and drug screens.
  • Must possess and continue to possess a valid driver’s license and pass random driver’s license screenings.
  • Must be able to take and pass, and continue to pass a DOT physical.
  • Travel is required; nights and weekends as well. Work is performed mainly throughout the state of Hawaii; occasional travel to Alaska or other U.S. locations may be required.
  • Overtime should be expected.
  • Certification from a lineman school is desired, not required.
