Under close supervision, performs the day‑to‑day duties associated with the operation of a water or wastewater facility. Has working knowledge of required procedures, equipment and operating standards and is able to resolve minor routine problems. Reports to the Facility Operations Supervisor and requires guidance to operate the facility.
Essential Job Functions Water Treatment Plant- Controls treatment plant machines and equipment to purify and clarify water for human consumption.
- Operates and controls electric motors, pumps, valves to regulate flow.
- Admits specified amounts of chemicals.
- Monitors, adjusts controls to regulate flow, pressure, and distribution of water.
- Repairs and lubricates machines and equipment using hand tools / power tools.
- Tests water samples.
- Records data.
- Operates sewage treatment, sludge processing and disposal equipment to control flow and processing of sewage.
- Monitors control panels.
- Adjusts valves and gates.
- Observes variations in operating conditions and interprets meter and gauge readings and test results to determine load requirements.
- Starts and stops pumps, engines, and generators to control flow of raw sewage, through filtering, settling, aeration, and sludge digestion processes.
- Maintains log of operations and records meter and gauge readings. Collects sewage samples and conducts lab tests using testing equipment.
- On call duty required with reliable transportation.
- Other duties as required.
- High School or GED.
- Minimum “C” Water and “C” Wastewater Certificates issued by the TCEQ.
- Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and good driving record.
- Strong ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally.
- Have a mechanical background and skills maintaining mechanical systems and tools.
- Must be a team player committed to working in a quality environment.
- Requires ability to read, write, compile, and analyze data and reports on a daily basis.
- Ability to express self logically and concisely in both oral and written form.
- Ability to maintain regular and predictable attendance.
- Be safety and environmentally conscious and follow all required safety and environmental procedures.
- Willing to work all shifts, including weekends, holidays, evenings and 24‑hour emergency on call.
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential function of this job. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, night vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
This position is a safety sensitive position.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outdoor weather conditions. The employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, blood borne pathogens and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
