JOB LOCATION: Kona Community Hospital – Women’s Health / Surgical & Recovery Services

SALARY: Entry: $4,566/month (HE06; BU10);
Full Performance: $4,933/month (HE08; BU10)

OVERVIEW

This position works in the surgery unit/operating room of a hospital or clinic and performs a variety of technical duties as a scrub technician and is considered a member of the surgical team. The role may require working evenings, weekends, and holidays to cover 24/7 hospital operations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assist in setting up instrument trays and preparing the operating room.
  • Decontaminate and sterilize surgical instruments independently.
  • Maintain aseptic technique and universal precautions.
  • Assist in patient preparation (e.g., shaving, draping) and support the surgical team during procedures.
  • Handle instruments in a manner that satisfies surgical staff and adheres to safety protocols.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Sensory: Ability to distinguish colors and shades to assist surgeons; hear verbal instructions; read written notes.
  • Coordination and Dexterity: Good bilateral hand and finger dexterity for passing instruments and holding retractors.
  • Strength and Stamina: Ability to stand, walk, and stoop for 4–5 hours during procedures.
  • Mobility: Ability to move freely and rapidly throughout the surgical suite.
QUALIFICATIONS – ENTRY LEVEL
  • One (1) year of experience in instrument decontamination, sterilization, and tray setup in a surgical setting.
  • Knowledge of decontamination/sterilization procedures, aseptic techniques, and safety protocols.
  • Ability to assist with patient prep and participate in the surgical team.
  • Graduation from a nationally certified training program for Operating Room Technician or Surgical Technician as an alternative to experience.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Workers, obtained within six (6) months of employment.
QUALIFICATIONS – FULL PERFORMANCE
  • All entry‑level qualifications.
  • One (1) year of experience working as a scrub technician in a surgical setting with progressive responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of surgical procedures and instruments, and ability to independently perform as a member of the sterile team (e.g., patient prep and OR setup).
  • Desirable:
    Completion of semester‑long coursework in anatomy, physiology, and microbiology.
