Phlebotomist

Responsibilities

• Serve patients by preparing specimens for laboratory testing and screening.
• Obtain blood specimens by performing venipuncture and finger sticks.
• Verify test requisitions by comparing information with physician orders.
• Alter or adjust methods and procedures for newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
• Perform quality control procedures and instrument checks.
• Demonstrate knowledge of correct anticoagulant to use for patient specimen collection.
• Notify the patient care unit and/or physician and lab if unable to obtain specimen in a timely manner.
• Meet current documentation standards and policies.
• Interact professionally with the Director of Clinical Laboratory, Pathologist and clinical laboratory personnel.
• Consult with other departments as appropriate to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities.
• Perform all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
• Follow standard precautions at all times.
• Maintain specimen quality by following department set standards and practices.
• Demonstrate knowledge of new testing methods, products, instrumentation; remain informed on all current technologies.
• Maintain current knowledge of hospital policy, HFAP, state and other regulatory requirements.
• Be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
• Value the team concept consistently.
• Assist in training new employees, using standardized orientation materials.

• BLS required within 6 months of hire.
• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Prior phlebotomy or medical experience preferred.
