Manufacturing Engineer, Mechanical Engineer
Corning is one of the world’s leading innovators in glass, ceramic, and materials science. From the depths of the ocean to the farthest reaches of space, our technologies push the boundaries of what’s possible.
How do we do this? With our people. They break through limitations and expectations– not once in a career, but every day. They help move our company, and the world, forward.
At Corning, there are endless possibilities for making an impact. You can help connect the unconnected, drive the future of automobiles, transform at-home entertainment, and ensure the delivery of lifesaving medicines. And so much more.
Come break through with us.
Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry. This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications.
The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
As a Mechanical Technician, you will play a pivotal role in fabricating prototypes and mockups to support new product development cycles. You will collaborate with engineers, CAD designers, sales and marketing personnel, along with senior technicians to create, assemble, and refine prototypes for functional testing, customer presentations, and internal reviews. Your work will involve sheet metal fabrication, 3D printing, fiber optic cable mockups, and operating a variety of power tools and equipment.
Mentorship from highly experienced technicians will help you develop your skills and grow in this role.
- Prototype Fabrication and Assembly:
- Bring sample products to life from engineering drawings and request description.
- Operate sheet metal fabrication equipment, such as laser cutters and press brakes, to produce high-quality components.
- Utilize SLA and FDM 3D printers to create prototypes based on provided designs.
- Fabricate mechanical components and fixtures as needed to support product development efforts.
- Assemble enclosures and prototypes, including routing, splicing, and testing fiber optic cables using specialized tools.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Work closely with engineers and prototype requestors to understand project requirements and provide updates on progress.
- Collaborate with CAD designers and senior technicians to ensure prototypes meet functional and aesthetic standards.
- Quality Assurance and Safety:
- Inspect fabricated parts and assemblies to ensure they meet design specifications and tolerances.
- Adhere to Corning safety protocols and maintain a clean, organized workspace following 5S principles.
- Problem Solving and Adaptability:
- Identify and address any issues during fabrication or assembly processes.
- Adapt to fluctuating project needs and deadlines based on the product development cycle.
