Position Summary

The Civil Superintendent is responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of civil construction projects, including earthworks, road building, and municipal infrastructure. This leadership role ensures projects are delivered safely, on time, and within budget while maintaining high‑quality standards in the unique conditions of the Kootenay region.

Key Responsibilities
  • Project Leadership
    • Lead and coordinate all field operations for civil construction projects.
    • Work closely with Project Managers to develop schedules, budgets, and execution strategies.
    • Ensure efficient deployment of crews, equipment, and subcontractors.
  • Construction Oversight
    • Supervise earthworks, road building and municipal infrastructure installations.
    • Manage complex excavation, trenching, shoring, and backfill operations.
  • Safety & Compliance
    • Champion and enforce a strong safety culture aligned with Work Safe regulations.
    • Conduct regular safety meetings, inspections, and hazard assessments.
    • Ensure full compliance with municipal, provincial, and environmental regulations.
  • Quality Control
    • Ensure all work meets design specifications, engineering standards, and municipal requirements.
    • Coordinate inspections with consultants, municipalities, and regulatory bodies.
    • Maintain documentation (daily reports, field changes, as‑builts).
  • Stakeholder Coordination
    • Liaise with:
      • Municipalities and regional districts in the Kootenays
      • Engineering consultants
      • Utility providers
      • Local communities and Indigenous stakeholders (as applicable)
  • Team Leadership & Development
    • Supervise and mentor forepersons, lead hands, and crews.
    • Support workforce planning, training, and performance management.
    • Foster a collaborative and accountable work environment.
Qualifications
  • Education & Experience
    • 8+ years of experience in underground utility construction.
    • 5+ years in a supervisory or superintendent role.
    • Civil Engineering Technology diploma or equivalent experience considered an asset.
  • Technical Expertise
    • Strong knowledge of civil construction methods and materials.
    • Trenching, shoring, and dewatering systems.
    • Reading and interpreting engineering drawings and specifications.
    • Experience with GPS machine control and survey layout is an asset.
  • Certifications
    • Valid BC Driver’s License.
    • First Aid certification (OFA Level 2 or 3 preferred).
    • WHMIS and CSTS or equivalent safety training.
    • Confined Space Entry and Ground Disturbance certification (asset).

Compensation

The role is a permanent, full‑time position with a typical starting salary range of $120,000 to $140,000 per annum. Variations in final salary are determined by additional factors such as the candidate’s qualifications, relevant years of experience, geographic location, and prevailing market conditions for the specific role.
