Custodian

Custodians are responsible for performing routine cleaning and maintaining the upkeep and safety of schools and facilities. They perform a range of janitorial tasks including cleaning, waxing, ensuring adequate heat and light, maintaining the recycling program, and assisting school-based staff with locking/unlocking rooms, moving furniture, and equipment. They must have knowledge of methods, materials, equipment, and safety procedures for emergencies.

Positions are casual, available on-call throughout the district. Full-time work may be available for those on a casual basis. Typical shifts are from 3:00 pm to 11:00 pm, Monday to Friday, with occasional day shifts or weekend work.

• Completed Grade 10 and successfully completed the Building Service Worker (BSW) course or equivalent training.
• At least two years of experience applying modern custodial methods and procedures.
• Physical ability to carry out required duties.
• English language proficiency for understanding oral and written instructions.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and professional demeanor.
• Ability to work independently and as a team player.
• Completion of a criminal record check.

The hourly wage is $26.74 per hour.

• Casual custodians receive 5% of bi-weekly earnings in lieu of vacation.
• 5% of straight-time earnings in each pay period in lieu of statutory holidays.
• After a probationary period and attainment of seniority, casual custodians receive 10% in lieu of benefits.
