Under general supervision of the Street/Drainage Lead Tech, performs skilled labor in support of the construction and maintenance of the City street and drainage systems to contribute to their safety and functionality. They are responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and safety of streets, catch basins, gutters, parking lots, and public areas. This position involves the safe operation of sweeping equipment, performing routine vehicle maintenance, and responding to emergency clean‑ups.
Subject to work after hours and weekends, as required. Sweeper Hours of operation 4:30 a.m.
- 3:00 p.m. with half‑hour lunch.
- Perform road and street maintenance including repairing potholes, sealing cracks, and overlay streets.
- Assist with the repair and maintenance of existing signs.
- Assist with the installation of striping, reflective buttons and thermoplastic control and visibility devices under supervision.
- Provide traffic control in areas of right‑of‑way work.
- Apply sand to roads and streets in inclement weather and assist in snow and ice control and removal.
- Perform utility locates in accordance with regulatory requirements, adopted procedures, and industry standards.
- Assist in the repair and maintenance of bridges.
- Operate motorized street‑drainage sweeping equipment (e.g., mechanical broom and vacuum sweepers) to clean assigned residential, commercial routes, gutter, catch basins, alleys, and parking lots.
- Remove debris, litter, and obstructions that are too large for the sweeper to sweep from the street, catch basin and gutter areas.
- Clean and wash the equipment thoroughly at the end of each shift.
- Assist in the repair and maintenance of ditches and culverts.
- Install, repair, and maintain catch basins.
- Shoot and establish grade.
- Safely and professionally operate equipment necessary to install and maintain the streets and drains.
- Perform routine inspection and maintenance necessary for the efficient and safe operation of the equipment including monitoring fuel, battery, windshield, oil, water, grease, brakes, tires, etc.
- Report problems and coordinate the repair of equipment with the Lead or Superintendent.
- Perform minor equipment repair on jobsite.
- High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- One (1) year experience in street/drainage maintenance, or closely related experience. Or an equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
- Equipment used (ability to learn):
Light duty vehicles, compactor, jackhammer, pump, air compressor, tapping machine, 10 yard dump trucks, backhoe, equipment trailer, trenchers, cut off saw, hand tools, line locator, three axle VAC truck with high pressure cleaning machine, boom truck, concrete saws, road grader, track hoe, crawler dozer, front loader, forklift and the ability to safely and professionally operate a wide range of equipment. - Thorough knowledge of public works construction and procedures related to street and drainage construction and maintenance.
- Knowledge of installing storm drains, catch basins and manholes.
- Knowledge of and adherence to the safety standards, practices, and procedures relating to all facets of the job.
- Ability to use basic oral and written communications in the performance of duties and responsibilities.
- Ability to make responsible decisions while in the field in order to assure a safe working environment and accomplish assigned duties.
- Ability to gain the trust and support of other employees when leading work parties.
- Ability to respond to citizen concerns, complaints, and requests.
