Applications are invited from enthusiastic and highly motivated individuals with specialist experience in haematology and blood transfusion for a 0.6 WTE (22.5hrs per week) Band 6 post to work in our Essential Services Laboratory at Westmorland General Hospital.

Applicants will be a HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist with a Specialist Portfolio (or equivalent experience) in Haematology and Blood Transfusion.

Main duties of the job

The Essential Services Laboratory is based at Westmorland General Hospital and provides Haematology and Blood Transfusion analyses. The site provides specialist Oncology and Orthopaedic services along with routine services. Our main equipment comprises of Beckman Coulter DXH 900 analysers and ACL TOP 300 series in the Haematology and coagulation section. Automation in Transfusion is provided by Quidel Ortho Vision analysers. You will be based at the Westmorland General Hospital, however you will be required to work across sites at both Royal Lancaster Infirmary in Lancaster and Barrow-in-Furness hospitals.

The role can sometimes be quite physical, with moderate moving and handling requirements, therefore you will need to be able to move around the laboratory and assist in the movement of loads. There are no shifts associated with this post. However, as this is a small laboratory flexibility is required to maintain service provision and in emergency situations.

The pathology service includes laboratories at Barrow-in-Furness (Furness General Hospital), Blackburn (Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital), Blackpool (Blackpool Victoria Hospital), Burnley (Burnley General Teaching Hospital), Chorley (Chorley General Hospital), Kendal (Westmorland General Hospital), Lancaster (Royal Lancaster Infirmary) and Preston (Royal Preston Hospital).
