Job Description

The para educator in this position will work directly with students in the bilingual classroom setting and assist classroom teachers in assigned tasks. The para educator will be responsible for carrying through prescribed instructional programs under the direct supervision of certificated staff. Other duties include adapting and making materials appropriate to instructional needs, recess supervision, maintaining accurate records, and performing other para educator duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Conditions of Employment
  • Must have High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have an AA degree OR 72 quarter college credits OR 48 semester college credits OR a passing score on the ETS test.
  • Must attach unofficial transcript proving AA or equivalent to application. Official transcripts of all levels of education, including high school, required within 30 days of hire.
  • Spanish bilingual skills required – must pass the STAMP bilingual assessment within two weeks of job offer.
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must be able to meet the Physical Demands of the position.
  • Must pass a basic skills test.
  • Completion of Safe Schools Web Based Training within 30 days of hire and yearly thereafter.
  • Must pass a background check, which includes employee paid fingerprinting.
Qualifications Required
  • Required academic skills to assist students (i.e., knowledge in sciences, language arts, math, reading and social studies).
  • Must uphold board policies and follow administrative procedures.
  • Must take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
  • Must attend in-service trainings or other meetings as required, as well as attend any training as directed by management.
  • Evidence of ability to assess and correct issues involving safety.
  • Evidence of ability to establish and maintain a tactful, cooperative and effective relationship with students, parents, staff, fellow employees and management.
  • Evidence of ability to approach assigned work in a professional manner, working toward the common goal of teamwork, pride in service delivery and continuous improvement.
  • Must demonstrate sufficient command of the English language to communicate verbally and in writing with students, parents, district staff members and other concerned people regarding all aspects of their job related activities.
  • Must be able to use basic computer programs to maintain records, enter timecard information and read and respond to email.
  • Must be willing to become first-aid certified if required.
Qualifications Preferred
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Recent experience working with students of diverse ethnic background
  • Able to relate effectively with children in a bilingual/bicultural setting
  • Proficient in providing supplemental reading instruction
  • Knowledge of second language acquisition, effective ESL strategies and methods.
  • Able to follow directions from supervising teacher and carry out prescribed instructional management program.
  • Able to model appropriate behaviors and consistent intervention procedures with students.
  • Able and willing to work in a team setting
  • Able to use office equipment, including keyboarding and data processing. Able to utilize computer and basic functions.
  • Effectively communicates and develops relationship with students, teachers, administrators, parents and public.
  • Able to work with interruptions while balancing daily responsibilities
  • Able to monitor student progress under teacher supervision
