Overview

Ojibway Language Teacher — Couchiching First Nation is seeking a full-time Ojibway Language Teacher for the 4

Cs Daycare in Fort Frances. This position is responsible for effective instruction, training, and evaluation of students’ ability to speak Ojibway. It is essential that instructors make cultural connections to traditions, story, song and land-based learning. The purpose of this position is to provide a meaningful program for the children of the community, so that children can have a positive head start that they can carry throughout their lifetime, and to help preserve, sustain and strengthen our language and culture.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Inspire and mentor students to develop pride in their ancestral language as well as teach and motivate them to use the Ojibway language in communications within all aspects of their daily lives
  • Supervise children based on age, development, and personality, ensuring compliance with established ratios through regular checks
  • Interact positively, nurturing, and constructively with children
  • Provide for children’s basic needs, including food, shelter, clothing, rest, hygiene and first aid
  • Plan and lead daily activities that support physical, social, intellectual, emotional, and sensory development, balancing active/quiet, indoor/outdoor, and group/individual activities
  • Observe and assess children’s development, informing the Daycare Manager of any needed support
  • Contribute to children’s individual guidance and behavior management plans
  • Collaborate constructively with staff in group settings
  • Attend staff meetings for information sharing, planning and team building
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of all information related to the children, parents, and staff
Job Qualifications and Experience
  • Must have working knowledge in Ojibway; fluency is the preferred qualification
  • Post-Secondary graduate of a Native Language Teaching program is preferred
  • Graduation from a recognized College or University program is an asset
  • Registered ECE (Early Childhood Educator) is an asset
  • Minimum of 2 years experience working with and caring for young children in a childcare facility
  • Current knowledge of curriculum, policies, procedures, legislation, needs development and practices for Early Childhood Education delivery in First Nation communities
  • Understanding of theories and methodologies for teaching Native Language and the ability to apply these to practice
  • Additionally, current Infant/Child First Aid and CPR Certificate or willingness to obtain
  • Knowledge of community services, customs and traditions
  • Must be able to provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Check for the Vulnerable Sector
