Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Principal, and in accordance with the Board Special Education Plan, assists designated students with activities of a special program, including modification and preparation of materials and activities. Provides observation and assessment data, record keeping, care and assistance, as well as medically necessary interventions (e.g. catheterization suctioning) and physical assistance when necessary. The position involves working in partnership within the school as a whole, supporting all students and dealing with and maintaining confidential information.

Qualifications

Ontario High School Diploma or equivalent required, as well as one of the following:
Diploma in Teacher Aide or Education Assistant, Child Care Worker Diploma, Developmental Services Worker Program, Children's Services Program, Early Childhood Education program, or an equivalent diploma or certificate program as determined by the Board. Recognized training as a Teacher Aide/Special Education Assistant or a Teachers' Certificate with Special Education, Core
1. Board approved crisis prevention training is required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbent works in a classroom environment with frequent interruptions and varying noise levels. Moderate physical effort normally required including routine walking, sitting or standing. Occasional heavy effort may be required in lifting, transporting, toileting or restraining students. Constant hearing/speech communication is necessary as is frequent visual concentration. Fine motor activities are required i.e. keyboarding, scribing, etc.
