Youth Residential Worker

As per Recommendation #114 of the Seven Youth Inquest (June 28, 2016), there has been “an identified need for an alternative detoxification facility in the City of Thunder Bay that would provide the proper supports and supervision for any youth who may be struggling with alcohol/substance misuse.” The KOBE Safe Sober Sites are available for our students, aged 13-21 years of age, that need a safe and supervised detoxification and stabilization.

KOBE will work in co-operation with local service providers to provide a quick response to meet the needs of our students.

The Youth Residential Workers will work under the direction of the Safe Sober Site Lead and the KOBE Inquest Manager, in the implementation and delivery of detoxification services for youth who are in the KOBE Student Services Program. The Youth Residential Worker will ensure the ordered care plans are followed, will supervise students at the site while they detoxify, and will provide support to students in their after-care plans.

The Youth Residential Workers will maintain case notes, tracking of any referrals/specialized services, after-care services, and program reporting requirements. The Youth Residential Worker would also work with the Addictions Crisis Worker, and KOBE SS On-Call Team to minimize gaps and improve overall services.

Salary Range: $48,000.00- $81,468.00

• 2 years education related work experience
• Bachelor’s Degree/College Diploma or equivalent experience and/or training
• Knowledge of First Nation Education & Health issues, Challenges, and Delivery models
• Ability to speak one of the local dialects is an asset
• Strong Interpersonal Skills
• Valid Class G Driver’s License
• Must be willing to provide a Vulnerable Persons Criminal Background Check
• Able to work effectively with others
• Ability to work independently
• Strong communication skills

• Maintain a culturally safe environment for students who require care while detoxifying
• Ongoing communication with the KOBE On-Call Workers to determine the student needs and any information that they may be aware of
• Work directly with the Health Service Provider and Medical Team to ensure all treatment plans are followed
• Provide timely reporting of health care services provided to the Well-Being Team
• Maintain communication processes with the KOBE Well-Being Team in all areas of after-care (return to boarding home/school, communication to Parents, to Boarding Home Parents/School Staff, etc.)
• Attend all training identified by the Safe Sober Site Lead and/or Addictions Crisis Worker in areas that would be relevant to their position
• Ensure timely reporting and development of materials required to carry out services
• Travel to the Keewaytinook Okimakanak communities:
  Deer Lake, Fort Severn, Keewaywin, McDowell Lake, North Spirit Lake and Poplar Hill First Nations, as necessary
• Able to do after hours shift work
• Other related duties as set by the KO Board of Education and KOBE Management
