Polysomnography Extern – Aurora Health Care

Base Pay Range$19.00/hr – $19.00/hr
Responsibilities- Collect, analyze, and integrate patient information to identify and meet patient‑specific needs (physical/mental limitations, current emotional/physiological status, pertinent medical/social history).
- Determine final testing parameters and procedures in collaboration with the ordering physician or clinical director and laboratory protocols.
- Follow sleep center protocols for the sleep study, including reviewing patient history and verifying medical orders.
- Score sleep/wake stages and generate accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data such as respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousals, etc., under the supervision of a Polysomnographic Technician.
- Perform appropriate interventions for patient safety and therapeutic needs (e.g., CPAP, BIPAP, and oxygen administration) under supervision.
- Assist with procedures and therapeutic interventions such as auto servo ventilation titrations, average volume assured pressure support, multiple sleep latency testing, maintenance of wakefulness testing, and home sleep apnea testing.
- Acquire polysomnographic data while monitoring study‑tracing quality and eliminate artifacts during the test, under supervision.
- Follow wake procedures to verify data integrity, repeat calibrations, and instruct patients on completing questionnaires.
- Set up video and audio monitoring equipment, keep it clean, detect malfunctions, make minor adjustments, and report required repairs; monitor supplies and maintain equipment.
- Participate in all quality assurance and improvement measures and processes.
- Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide age‑appropriate care, assessing data and interpreting patient needs relative to developmental stages.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification from the American Heart Association within 30 days.
- Completion of the Accredited Sleep Technologist Education Program (A‑STEP) within 3 months.
High School Graduate
Experience RequiredTypically requires 6 months of direct patient care experience.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities- Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and problem‑solving skills.
- Basic computer skills.
- Ability to take direction, consistently implement it, and ask for clarification from colleagues such as registered Polysomnography Technologists, Lead Technologists, Supervisors, and Managers.
- Ability to make independent clinical decisions as applicable while operating under supervision.
- May drive between sites and be exposed to road hazards.
- Operate all equipment essential to performing the job.
- Must sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, and kneel throughout the workday.
- Lift up to 50 lbs from the floor to waist.
- Lift up to 20 lbs over the head.
- Carry up to 40 lbs over a reasonable distance.
- Push/pull with 30 lbs of force.
- Perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs with a second person present.
- Be exposed to mechanical, electrical, and chemical hazards and wear protective clothing as necessary.
