Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval determines the award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) after review by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office.

Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements as listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic

Requirements
  • United States citizenship. Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.
  • Doctor of medicine (M.D.) or an equivalent degree in medicine or osteopathic medicine from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year of completion.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
  • Completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (Approved residencies include ACGME or AOA accredited programs or other residencies followed by a minimum of five years of verified U.S. practice deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee.)
  • Physician residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited programs who otherwise meet the basic requirements are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners, are not privileged, and have a scope of practice that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Board certification by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) in the specialty/sub‑specialty indicated in the scope of practice. Refer to VA qualification standards.
Duties
  • Provide outpatient clinical practice at the Kent satellite clinic affiliated with the Louis Stokes Cleveland VAMC, caring for patients with a broad range of hematologic and oncologic conditions in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Serve primarily in an outpatient capacity with occasional weekend inpatient consult coverage at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VAMC.
  • Maintain a demonstrated clinical reputation and evidence of excellence in academic activity within Hematology and Oncology.
  • Hold board certification in Oncology (required) and Hematology (eligible or certified preferred). Eligible for a faculty appointment in the Department of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine commensurate with experience.
  • Work Monday‑Friday 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., while remaining available for limited weekend responsibilities as required.
  • Participate in the VA's Whole Health System of care model, including personalized health plans, healing relationships, and community connection for Veterans.
