Job Title: HVAC Technician II

Overview

Basic Function:
Performs the full range of HVAC maintenance and installation tasks. Reports to HVAC Supervisor or other designated supervisor.

Responsibilities
  • Repairs air conditioning, refrigeration and heating units and systems, refrigeration systems, pneumatic controls, steam traps, pressure regulators, steam separators, pumps, fans and motors and related heating, cooling and refrigeration equipment and periodically overhauls air conditioning and heating systems.
  • Inspects air conditioning, refrigeration and heating systems and performs preventive maintenance (e.g. cleans or changes filters, lubricates motors, tightens belts) to ensure serviceable condition of systems.
  • Installs air conditioning (i.e. window and central systems) and heating units and installs piping, pumps, motors and refrigeration systems; handles and disposes refrigerants.
  • Assists trade personnel (e.g. plumber, carpenter, electricians, etc.) and/or contractors in maintenance repairs and/or performs building maintenance and trade tasks (e.g. troubleshoots and maintains all restaurant equipment); performs maintenance and repair of all HVAC related equipment; orders and/or picks up parts; obtains price quotes/bids; maintains required reports and records; maintains equipment (e.g. manifold gauges, hand tools, power equipment, leak scanner); attends required meetings and training.
  • Maintains chemical levels and control systems for chilled and condenser water treatment systems.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent. A minimum of three years experience in analyzing and repairing HVAC equipment: chillers, cooling towers, condensers, etc. Completion of vocational education program or apprenticeship in a related field may be substituted for one year of experience. May be called to work in emergency situations. Requires on and off-campus travel.

License/Certification

"Universal" technician certification as issued by EPA approved certifying organization per Section 608 of Clean Air Act. Valid Ohio driver’s license with safe driving record.

Knowledge Of

Air conditioning, refrigeration and heating technology;
Tools and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of air conditioning, refrigeration and heating units;
Local, state, and federal regulations related to electrical codes and OSHA standards.

Skill In

Reading blueprints (schematics and wire diagrams);
Heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration maintenance, repair, and installation;
Mathematics associated with trade applications such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division;
Reading (e.g., technical manuals), writing (e.g., work logs), and accurately following oral, written, and graphic instructions;
Utilizing computerized equipment (e.g., laptops, personal computers and direct digital controllers);
Utilizing hand and power tools.

Ability To

Diagnose problems and determine appropriate action;
Communicate with University personnel and the public (e.g., to gather information about needed repairs, to explain problems encountered);
Maintain accurate records;
Work in high places, tunnels, and crawl spaces;
Lift up to 100 lbs. (and related physical tasks).

Preferred Qualifications

HVAC trades school.

Working Conditions /

Physical Requirements

Exposed to dirt, odors, moisture/wetness, heights, variable temperatures and weather conditions, loud equipment noise, potentially dangerous equipment (e.g. hand and power tools), light chemical substances (e.g. cleaning solutions), electricity and occasional high voltage; requires moderate physical exertion to include frequent lifting of up to 50 pounds (e.g. motors, repair parts), occasional lifting of up to 100 pounds (e.g. purge pumps), climbing ladders, extended periods of walking and standing, and working in crawl spaces.

Working

Schedule

Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; however, schedule may vary to meet departmental needs.
