Job Description & How to Apply Below

We have an exciting opportunity to join KMMH as a Medical Education Undergraduate Fellow, Trust Grade ST4‑ST7 doctor.

This is a full‑time post, 40 hours per week, optional Tier 2 on‑call rota for section 12 approval holders. Part‑time applications will also be considered. The post is available from 26 August 2024 until 7 August 2027.

The post holder will be expected to attend various locations in Kent for meetings, teaching sessions and events, but the base location can be flexible to suit the appointed candidate.

The Fellowship is hosted by Kent and Medway Mental Health NHS Trust (KMMH). It supports Undergraduate work streams concerning Medical Student Psychiatry Placements at KMMH, with students from King’s College London School of Medicine (GKT) and Kent and Medway Medical School (KMMS).

Funding for a Postgraduate Qualification in Education will be available to the appointed candidate to undertake during the year.

Designed to support ST4‑7s who wish to commit to education as part of their career, the OOPE post at KMMH aims to build on teaching experience, develop expertise in educational theory and practice, and undertake supervised educational research.

A designated educational mentor will oversee development and coordinate opportunities for personal development. A customised training programme will be designed around individual needs.

Although enthusiasm for teaching is a prerequisite, no assumptions are made about formal knowledge of educational theory. Hands‑on teaching will be central, along with critical engagement with educational issues in undergraduate and postgraduate training in a changing national and local context.

The Trust (rated Good overall by the CQC and Outstanding for care) has 3,283 staff working in 66 buildings across 33 locations covering 1,450 square miles.

The Fellowship includes these components
  • Teaching

The post holder will have regular teaching commitments and contribute to the development and delivery of the Trust’s undergraduate education programme for medical students. Working with the Trust Undergraduate Tutor, the post holder will lead support and delivery of the in‑house teaching programme for psychiatry placements, including student induction days, coordinating fellow psychiatric trainees to teach students, supporting simulation training and student meetings.

Undergraduate administrators facilitate feedback and organise teaching programmes. Opportunities to audit aspects of the undergraduate teaching programme are also available.

  • Educational Research and Improvement

The post holder will have the opportunity to take part in a range of educational research activities and improvement projects centred on undergraduate medical student training, but also including other learner groups. The Trust’s large research department and improvement team support doctors. The post holder will be supported to generate publishable outputs, including conference presentations (national and international) and publications in peer‑reviewed medical and educational journals.

  • Clinical Commitment

A clinical commitment of one day per week will ensure the post holder maintains clinical involvement and encounters postgraduate doctors. Details will depend on the appointee’s specialty and experience but may include an outpatient clinic or related activity. Remuneration will be in keeping with the level of training at the time of appointment.

  • Learning about Medical Education Structures and Roles

The post holder will attend the Trust Medical Education Committee meetings and will have opportunities to attend meetings at the KMMS (Canterbury) and GKT (London) Medical Schools, as well as shadowing undergraduate tutors and the Director of Undergraduate Medical Education.

  • Simulation

Simulation training for undergraduates is a key part of the Medical Education department. The role supports simulation training delivered face‑to‑face at teaching events.

NOTE: All applicants must hold a full GMC registration with a Licence to Practice in the UK. Early applications are welcomed and encouraged. The advert may close earlier than the advised end date. Part‑time hours will be considered.
