Our client, a well-established environmental consultancy based in Kent, is seeking an experienced Principal Ecologist to join their growing team. This is an excellent opportunity for a senior ecologist looking to take the next step in their career, with the chance to lead projects, mentor staff, and play a key role in the continued development of the ecology function.

The Role
As Principal Ecologist, you will be responsible for managing a diverse portfolio of projects across residential, commercial, and infrastructure sectors. You will provide technical leadership, ensure high standards of ecological assessment and reporting, and support the strategic growth of the ecology team.
Key responsibilities include:
Leading and managing ecological projects from inception to delivery
Providing technical expertise on UK habitat and protected species legislation
Reviewing and authoring ecological reports (PEAs, EcIAs, HRAs, etc.)
Acting as a key point of contact for clients, planners, and stakeholders
Mentoring and supporting junior and mid-level ecologists
Contributing to business development and tender submissions
About You
You will be an experienced ecologist with strong technical knowledge and proven leadership skills. You should be confident managing projects independently and advising clients on complex ecological matters.
Essential requirements:
Degree in Ecology or a related discipline
Extensive experience in UK ecological consultancy
Strong knowledge of UK wildlife legislation and planning policy
Experience managing and delivering ecological projects
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Desirable:
Membership of CIEEM (or eligibility for a senior grade)
Protected species survey licences
Experience line-managing or mentoring staff
