The Youth Education Specialist (YESOL) supports high-quality programming for refugee and immigrant youth in New York City, including managing YESOL classes, curriculum development, assessment, and program monitoring. The role involves coordinating youth programs, supporting summer and mini-academy activities, and managing interns.
Responsibilities- Lead Youth English for Speakers of Other Languages (YESOL) classes including curriculum preparation and updating syllabi
- Manage intake and assessment processes including administering English assessments and collaborating with parents and teachers
- Teach multiple groups of Middle School and High School students at various proficiency levels
- Monitor and evaluate YESOL program including tracking attendance, documenting case notes, and synthesizing data for reports
- Recruit, hire, and manage Youth ESOL interns, delegating tasks and providing professional development
- Manage Saturday Parent ESOL classes
- Support Mini Newcomer Youth Spring Academy (Mini NYSA) and Newcomer Youth Summer Academy (NYSA) including program planning, staff recruitment, lesson instruction, and assessment data management
- Assist in coordination of caregiver-teacher conferences and school-wide Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS)
- Lead staff-appreciation events and initiatives
- Lead groups of students on off-site field trips
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Bachelor's degree in education or relevant field;
Master's degree candidate in education preferred - Must be available for Saturdays to run programming
- Strong command of Microsoft Suite, G Suite, Canva, and other digital platforms required
- Classroom teaching experience preferred (both in-person and online, especially TESOL experience)
- Experience with data collection and analysis
- Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Cultural competence and cross-cultural or overseas experience required
- Experience working with immigrant populations, highly desirable
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, adapting programming to shifting client needs and relevant government policy changes
- Fluency in written and spoken English required
- Second language proficiency in relevant language highly desirable (including Spanish, French, Dari, Farsi, Pashto, Arabic, Tibetan, Russian, Haitian Creole, Ukrainian, Mandarin, etc.)
