** STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
** Incumbent will create and maintain a safe, positive learning environment to ensure the holistic development of each student and staff member through cultural, social, spiritual, physical and academic experience. Incumbent will support the Bureau of Indian Education’s mission, which is to provide high quality education opportunities from early childhood through life while considering a tribe’s need for cultural and economic well-being.

In performing this mission, the BIE takes into account the spiritual, mental, physical, and cultural aspects of school-aged children within their family and tribal community. To meet its trust responsibility to Indian Tribes, BIE works to strengthen education opportunities for American Indian students to be successful and competitive globally; to enhance student participation in their tribal communities; and support tribes in nation-building, in development of the next generation of tribal leaders.

Responsibilities:

The incumbent of this position serves, in a supportive capacity to professional educators and will perform at the paraprofessional level- assisting certified staff in the delivery of education activities to identified special education students. Will assist the special education staff/teacher and/or principal in developing, updating and implementing I.E.P.'s for each student when necessary.

Duties will include:
1) Will participate in M/D team meetings and is a full participant in the outcomes of those meetings.
2) Keep records and documentation required by law and/or directed by professional and/or certified staff.
3) Participate in documentation and evaluation of progress of individual students and provide accurate feedback to the speech pathologist and certified staff/teachers.
4) Participate in coordination, with regular classroom teachers, of lessons, regular classroom activities, and scheduling, which will benefit the students.
5) Acting in a supportive capacity, instructs groups and individuals, many of which are experiencing learning and/or language difficulties.
6) Constructs learning materials and maintains a learning environment that provides and promotes meaningful opportunities for the students to develop and learn.
7) Assists certified education staff/teachers with all phases of the program. This may involve student hygiene; help with personal tasks such as bathroom, washing, grooming, walking, emotional nurture, recreational activities, field trips and handling tasks that often occur among children with special needs.
8) Will serve as a parental liaison as an ongoing responsibility to promote a strong parent/student/school staff relationship.

May be called upon to work in regular classroom settings in carrying out the inclusion effort of the special education program (teaching, planning, scheduling, evaluating, and constructing an optimum learning environment).
