Position: Campus Minister for Parish (EX)
Location: Northern

The Campus Minister ensures the various aspects of ministering to the Johns Hopkins University campus are carried out. The people served primarily include Hopkins students (especially the Catholics), the parishioners of SS. Philip and James, and to some extent the staff, faculty as well as alumni and parents from the University. The campus minister serves in the context of Saints Philip and James Church, which is a University Parish, through the Catholic Community at Hopkins (CCH), our campus ministry.

The Campus Minister will work closely with the Dominican friars and the staff lip and James, especially the Chaplain, the FOCUS missionaries, and the Director of Development and Stewardship.

The Campus Minister will work alongside and report directly to the Chaplain and ultimately the Pastor for implementing the evangelical mission of the CCH. The Campus Minister will collaborate with the Chaplain on the formation of our Catholic students and the evangelization of the campus to the saving Name of Jesus Christ. He or she will also enter into the particularly Dominican character of our University Parish.

Essential Functions

Encourage and form students to authentically practice their Catholic faith on campus. Help the Chaplain develop, implement, and direct a comprehensive campus ministry program for Johns Hopkins by:

  • Leading and modeling a regular life of prayer and sacraments: especially attending daily Mass as often as possible and regular confession.
  • Assisting with the faith formation of the undergraduate students; especially through the CCH’s weekly Newman Night
  • Facilitating community building, through Sunday Family Dinners, etc.
  • Teaching students about their individual call to apostolic mission and how to live that out on campus and in the community.
  • Developing student leadership and guiding student leaders through mentorship and/or discipleship
  • Working alongside the FOCUS team for evangelizing the University campus
  • Assisting the Chaplain in the content and running of the yearly CCH Retreats (Fall, Men’s/Women’s, and Spring)
  • Finding creative ways to minister to Hopkins graduate students
  • Respond to the pastoral needs of students, faculty, and staff as needed.

Promote the orderly and smooth running of CCH by:

  • Managing the CCH calendar in coordination with the broader parish calendar.
  • Taking charge of CCH student-oriented communications, to promote our campus ministry and parish events.
  • Maintaining the general upkeep of the Campus Ministry facilities (Newman Center and Campus ministry offices).
  • Perform all other duties as assigned

This is a full-time (40 hours per week), exempt, professional ministry position. Night and weekend work is necessary primarily during the academic year. The Campus Minister will be asked to spend 50% of his or her time on operations of the campus ministry (organizing calendar, booking speakers, planning retreats, etc.) in conjunction with the Chaplain. The remaining 50% will be more direct ministry (work with student leaders and FOCUS, leading men’s or women’s groups, giving talks, events on campus, community service).

The position requires work in person, principally on the Hopkins and SS. Philip and James campuses and might require travel for such things as service projects, pilgrimages, campus ministers’ meetings and to Archdiocesan events. The Campus Minister will collaborate with the Archdiocese of Baltimore’s Institute for Evangelization and be the liaison with other Campus Ministries in Baltimore and beyond.

Position Qualifications

  • Applicants must be practicing Catholics in good standing.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Catholic faith with the ability to relate that knowledge to young adults in a campus ministry setting.
  • Familiar with relevant church documents pertaining to…
