Prison Librarian, Evening Shift, Suffolk County Sheriff's Department, House of Correction (Boston)Under the direct supervision of the Education Director, the evening librarian assists in the administration and operation of the library at the Suffolk County House of Correction in Boston. The librarians provide inmates with access to library services and legal services in compliance with state and professional standards and constitutional requirements, support the institution's educational and rehabilitative programming, and share the Sheriff's Department's commitment to maintaining the safe and secure custody and control of inmates.
The population served consists of adult male and female inmates convicted of crimes with a sentence of two and a half years or less, and pretrial detainees.
- Supervise the operation of the institution library during the evening shift (1:30 - 9:00 PM)
- Provide reference and reader's advisory services to the inmate population
- Maintain and develop a general library collection for use by inmates
- Assist in selecting and procuring library materials through new purchases and donations
- Maintain and update an adequate law library to ensure inmate access to legal materials including statutes, case law, legal reference material, and confidential discovery records
- Deliver library materials to special population units without direct access to the library
- Assist in developing and conducting library programming
- Assist in formulating schedules and procedures to assure all inmates have access to library services
- Provide inmates access to computers and internet content as permitted by institution policy
- Train and supervise inmate library workers
Prepare reports and maintain statistics - Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending training and participating in professional activities
- Work professionally with institutional custody and non-custody staff to support the Sheriff's Department's programming efforts and maintain a safe and secure environment
- Bachelor's Degree required.
- Master's Degree in Library and Information Studies, or library experience, or correctional education experience preferred.

MINIMUMPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- sit or stand periodically for 8 hours;
- lift up to 40 pounds;
- carry up to 40 pounds;
- climb stairs occasionally;
- walk short distances; and
- write and type.
