United South End Settlements | Boston, MA & Sandwich, NH | Year-Round

Compensation: $100,000 to $110,000 plus benefits

About Camp Hale

Located on Squam Lake in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, Camp Hale has provided Boston youth the opportunity to experience sleepaway camp since 1900. As part of United South End Settlements, a nonprofit dedicated to building a community that fosters children’s growth, inspires new possibilities, and provides the tools to create positive change, Camp Hale welcomes 300+ youth each summer, ages 5–17.

Camp Hale’s sliding-scale tuition model ensures cost is never a barrier to belonging, and roughly 75% of families receive financial assistance. Camp Hale is one of only seven camps in New England that serve primarily Black and Brown youth, and 78% of our campers identify as BIPOC. Campers hike, swim, canoe, garden, and build lasting friendships across the racial, ethnic, and socio-economic differences that make up our community.

Camp Hale is part of USES’s broader continuum of programming, alongside Early Childhood Education (ECE), Children’s Art Centre, and club
48, a year-round after school and out-of-school time program that serves the Boston community.

Position Overview

Reporting to the CEO, the Camp Director is a senior leader responsible for the strategy, enrollment, program quality, safety, and financial sustainability of Camp Hale.

The Camp Director sets the vision and direction for camp programming and leads a team of year-round and seasonal staff to bring that vision to life. As USES works to strengthen Camp Hale enrollment and deepen its connection to club
48, USES’s Boston-based out-of-school-time program, the Camp Director will play a central role in building a strong camper pipeline, strengthening community partnerships, and ensuring Camp Hale’s continued place as a cornerstone of the USES community.

The Camp Director also plays an active role in Camp Hale’s community presence, building strong relationships with campers and their families. In addition, the Director partners with the Fundraising & Development team on donor stewardship and represents Camp Hale across Boston and the Squam Lake community in Sandwich, NH.

We are looking for a leader who is rooted in Boston's community and has a deep commitment to working with underserved youth.

This is a full-time, year-round position based in Boston, working a hybrid schedule of two days per week in the USES Boston office, and residing at Camp Hale in Sandwich, NH from June through August. Compensation is $100,000 to $110,000 , plus benefits and summer housing at camp.

Team Structure

The Camp Director reports to the Chief Executive Officer of USES and oversees the following team members:

  • Caretaker (year-round): maintains the Camp Hale property and grounds.
  • Seasonal staff : 30 counselors, 10 Counselors-in-Training (CITs), seasonal program administrators, food service, and health teams.
