PLC Programmer & Controls Technician - Rockwell Studio 5000 | Continuous Manufacturing (Relocation Assistance Available)

Pave Talent is hiring on behalf of a well-established industrial manufacturer with over a century of continuous operations. This privately-held company employs 500+ across multiple U.S. facilities and was recently named by Newsweek as one of America's Greatest Workplaces in 2024. Known for operational excellence, safety-first culture, and significant investment in technology modernization, this organization provides the stability of a mature company with the innovation mindset of a tech startup.

The Role's Impact

As the Process Controls Technician, you're not just maintaining systems—you're the go-to expert who keeps continuous production running at peak efficiency. This newly created position reflects the company's investment in controls expertise and facility modernization. You'll own the entire control system lifecycle from troubleshooting PLC code to managing small capital projects, directly impacting plant uptime (targeting >98%), product quality, and operational safety.

What You'll Do Daily

  • Troubleshoot and optimize Rockwell Studio 5000 PLC programs and AVEVA SCADA systems to diagnose hardware failures, correct programming errors, and maintain control system reliability for 24/7 continuous manufacturing operations
  • Program and tune Allen Bradley PLCs (Control Logix, Compact Logix), VFDs (Power Flex, ABB), and HMI systems, spending 90% of your time actively solving control system challenges rather than passive monitoring
  • Perform hands-on electrical fieldwork including motor control troubleshooting, instrumentation diagnostics, and reading/interpreting electrical schematics—this role combines programming skills with practical electrical maintenance (50% office, 50% field)
  • Monitor control system health using KPIs like PID loop performance (% time in auto mode) and alarm frequency, identifying and executing corrective actions to prevent issues before they impact production
  • Manage small control system projects from concept to commissioning—scope instrument additions, obtain vendor quotes, create electrical drawings in AutoCAD Electrical, track budgets, and oversee contractor installation
  • Provide commissioning and startup support for larger engineering capital projects, collecting field data, updating documentation, and ensuring seamless integration with existing control systems
  • Audit electrical rooms and process areas for NFPA 70E safety compliance, entering maintenance corrective actions and championing safe work practices across all functional groups
  • Collaborate with process engineering, production supervisors, and maintenance electricians to improve plant reliability through data-driven control system enhancements

Required Qualifications

  • Certificate in Electrical Automation Technology from an accredited technical or community college (Associate's degree in Electrical Automation, Controls, or related field preferred and can substitute for experience requirement)
  • Three years of hands-on experience in industrial electrical maintenance or electrical process controls within a manufacturing environment (24/7 operations preferred)
  • Manufacturing electrical background with strong understanding of how industrial equipment operates in continuous production settings
  • Proficiency reading and interpreting electrical blueprints, schematics, P&IDs, and control panel wiring diagrams
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical concepts with operators, engineers, managers, and contractors across multiple organizational levels
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to diagnose and resolve control system issues quickly under pressure
  • Committed to safe work practices with knowledge of relevant electrical safety standards (NFPA 70E, OSHA, lockout/tagout)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficient in Rockwell Automation ecosystem:
Studio 5000 (or RSLogix 5000/500 legacy systems), Factory Talk View, RSLinx
  • Experience with AVEVA System Platform (formerly Wonderware), InTouch HMI development, or Thin Manager terminal management
  • Skilled in AutoCAD Electrical for creating and modifying electrical drawings and control…
