Lead and Senior Substation P&C Relay Technician

Senior substation technician responsible for commissioning, testing, maintenance, and repair of protective relay schemes within generation, transmission, and distribution substation environments.

Conduct commissioning, testing, maintenance, and repair of complex protective relaying schemes. Operate electrical test equipment (Omicron, Doble, Vanguard, etc.) and interface with software (Test Universe, Protection Suite, AcSELerator, Wireshark, etc.). Facilitate retrofit, upgrade, and replacement projects for electrical controls, SCADA, DCS, and power system protection equipment.

• Test current/voltage, directional, distance, impedance, sync check, loss of field, reverse power, multifunction relays and other protection devices.
• Perform function testing on substation control circuits, relay panels, transformers, and circuit breaker controls, including isolation, setpoint, advanced logic, and scheme testing.
• Perform end‑to‑end relay testing using Doble Protection Suite, RTS, or Test Universe to verify communication‑assisted protection schemes.
• Install, commission, test, and maintain protective relaying equipment, relay schemes, DFR equipment, SCADA, distribution automation systems, and associated communications equipment.
• Assist in developing written standard commissioning, testing, and maintenance procedures for protective relaying, DFRs, RTUs, IEDs, distribution automation, and communication systems.
• Generate customer reports describing problems found and correction actions taken or proposed.
• Maintain professional attitude when representing the company with vendors, customers, and service providers.

• Minimum five years of field experience in commissioning, panel and equipment checkout, relay calibration, testing, and repair of sub‑station relays and control schemes.
• Experience desirable in sub‑station commissioning, SCADA, fault data/survey, integration, and automation equipment installation and testing.
• Strong understanding of protocols (DNP3, Modbus, 480 V, ASE 2000, etc.) and ability to troubleshoot SCADA issues using protocol test sets.
• Experience with three‑phase power systems, power system protection, and control schemes.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
• Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
• Ability to distinguish color coding of wires, fiber optics, or other materials.
