Maintenance Technician / Mechanic, Mechanical Engineer, Quality Engineering
Science is an early stage company developing technologies for a range of serious unmet medical needs. We are unafraid to take difficult technical risks. We are secure in the knowledge that, with a clear understanding of what we are doing and with support from powerful modern tools, more progress is possible than might be immediately obvious.
We are seeking an experienced Facility Engineer to support the operation, maintenance, and optimization of our California facilities. The ideal candidate will ensure continuous operation of all critical cleanroom systems while maintaining ISO cleanroom standards and supporting our manufacturing/research operations. Regardless of role or team, the two most important factors we look for in a candidate are evidence of exceptional ability and the addition of positive energy to the group.
The ability to largely independently orient yourself to the problems that need to be solved and then follow through is essential.
Role responsibilities:
- Cleanroom Operations:
Monitor and maintain HVAC, air filtration (HEPA/ULPA), and environmental control systems to consistently meet ISO Class 7 classification standards for temperature, humidity, pressure, and particle levels. - Critical Utilities Management:
Maintain and troubleshoot process cooling water, chilled water, compressed dry air, nitrogen, vacuum, DI water, electrical/UPS, and chemical distribution/waste neutralization systems. - Preventive & Corrective Maintenance:
Execute PM programs, respond to emergency failures and alarms, manage spare parts inventory, and maintain accurate equipment records and documentation. - Vendor & Contractor Coordination:
Partner with external specialists for repairs and projects, ensuring minimal downtime and adherence to facility standards. - Compliance & Safety:
Ensure adherence to OSHA, EPA, and local regulations - Continuous Improvement:
Identify efficiency and reliability improvements, implement predictive maintenance strategies, optimize energy consumption, and support facility expansion and upgrade projects. - R&D:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Facilities Engineering (or Associate's degree with 5+ years of relevant experience)
- 3–5 years of experience in cleanroom facility operations or semiconductor manufacturing, with hands‑on knowledge of HVAC, process utilities, and building management systems (BMS)
- Strong understanding of cleanroom design, ISO 14644 standards, and contamination control protocols
- Proficiency reading mechanical/electrical drawings and P&IDs
- Ability to work in a cleanroom environment (gowning required), lift up to 50 lbs, work at heights/confined spaces, and availability for on‑call/after‑hours response
Preferred qualifications:
- Professional Engineer (PE) license, Certified Energy Manager (CEM), HVAC certification, or cleanroom‑specific training/certification
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with excellent communication and the ability to manage multiple priorities independently
- Detail‑oriented with solid documentation habits and a collaborative, team‑first mindset
- Eagerness to continuously learn and adapt to new technologies and evolving facility demands
