PUBLIC NOTICE- DEA Criminal Investigators

Responsibilities- Conduct complex criminal investigations targeting narcotics and drug-related activities.
- Prepare comprehensive and succinct investigative reports and deliver briefings to senior personnel and other federal, state, and local agencies.
- Identify and apprehend drug traffickers and arrest individuals engaged in criminal drug activities.
- Gather and analyze evidence through investigative leads, seizures, arrests, execution of search warrants, and a variety of other means.
- Testify on behalf of the Federal government in court or before grand juries.
Applicants who have not completed previous federal law enforcement training must attend and complete a 16‑week residential training program. Current or former 1811 applicants who have successfully completed a Federal Criminal Investigation training program may qualify for a 3‑week Special Agent Transition Program (FCIT transcripts must be attached).
Requirements- U.S. citizenship required.
- Must obtain and maintain a Top‑Secret security clearance.
- Sign a mobility agreement confirming relocation to any DEA location.
- Complete a pre‑employment medical clearance and annual medical examination.
- A full‑scope pre‑employment polygraph is required; 1811 applicants with prior polygraph may seek reciprocity.
- Selective Service registration for males born after 12/31/59.
- Age 21 – 36 at appointment (veteran preferences apply).
- Pass the E‑Verify employment verification check.
- One‑year or two‑year trial period as applicable.
- Valid state driver’s license.
- Random drug testing.
- Complete the 16‑ to 20‑week Basic Agent Training (BAT) course at the DEA Training Academy in Quantico, Virginia.
- GL‑07:
One year of specialized experience at GL/GS‑05 level (assisting investigations, writing reports, researching data). - Substitution of education for experience:
One full year of graduate‑level education or superior academic achievement (SAA) can meet the GL/GS‑07 requirement. - GL‑09:
One year of specialized experience at GL/GS‑07 level (assisting investigations, collecting data, writing reports, testifying). - Substitution of education for experience:
Master’s degree, 2‑year graduate education, LL.B. or J.D. can meet the GL/GS‑07 requirement. - GL‑11:
One year of specialized experience at GL/GS‑09 level (conducting federal criminal investigations, developing operational plans, operating undercover, eliciting information, testifying). - Substitution of education for experience:
Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or three years of progressive graduate education can meet the GL/GS‑09 requirement. - Education must be accredited by an institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
- Foreign education must be comparable to a U.S. accredited institution.
Special Agents may be required to work substantial overtime and irregular schedules, including weekends and holidays. A mobility agreement confirms the acceptance of reassignment to any domestic DEA facility. Relocation expenses and benefits are provided in accordance with agency policy.
