- Sign complaints and issue citations for violations of the Village of Wheeling Municipal Code.
- Assist the general public with requests for service which do not require a sworn officer to perform in order to provide community service.
- Complete assignments of animal complaints including, but not limited to, stray animals, animal abuse, setting humane traps, apprehending stray animals and transporting impounded or biting animals to the pound-keeper to ensure safety of the public and the animal.
- Respond to non-emergency calls as assigned and complete incident reports.
- Assist the Community Engagement Unit with events and safety initiatives as needed.
- Direct traffic and enforce local parking regulations.
- Appear as witness before the court in reference to issuance of citations for the violation of Village Ordinances, including procuring evidence and a list of witnesses to the Court and Village Prosecutor.
- Complete tasks assigned by supervisory officers to allow orderly administration of the police function.
- Assist in processing crime scenes under the direction of a supervisor or designated Investigator.
High school diploma or equivalent. Some knowledge of criminal justice operations, rules, and regulations. Must possess and maintain a valid Illinois driver’s license.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSTraining or experience in animal control, handling, or related techniques, as well as training or experience working with the public, preferably in a law enforcement or public safety setting.
This is a union position represented by the Metropolitan Alliance of Police (MAP) – Non-Sworn. Starting salary is $60,070 annually, with placement on the union salary scale based on qualifications and experience.
