Generic Specialist Practitioner - Respiratory - Virtual Wards

This role is a Band 4 position within NHS Lanarkshire, based in the Respiratory Virtual Wards at Kirklands – NHSL Headquarters. The post is full‑time (37 hours per week) with a 7‑day working rota and is a permanent appointment.

Responsibilities
  • Act as a skilled advisor and resource within a multidisciplinary team, providing coordinated service delivery.
  • Exercise autonomy in clinical decision‑making, admitting, referring, and discharging patients within the scope of the specialist role.
  • Allocate and delegate clinical activities and interventions as required, while maintaining accountability for standards of care.
  • Ensure the highest standards of practice through clinical governance and evidence‑based care.
  • Continuously develop and apply specialist knowledge, fostering professional competence and personal development.
  • Provide specialist expertise and advice that informs service development.
  • Deputise for senior staff in their absence.
  • Represent NHS Lanarkshire at national and strategic meetings relating to the specialty.
Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse or AHP with valid NMC/HCPC registration.
  • Degree level education.
  • Postgraduate qualification at Level 10 (Hons) or in progress.
  • Expertise within the respiratory specialty with comprehensive knowledge of clinical guidelines and standards.
  • Leadership skills enabling day‑to‑day management of service delivery.
  • Evidence of continuous professional development (study days, courses, or postgraduate qualification).
  • Excellent team‑working, leadership, listening, communication, interpersonal, and time‑management skills.
  • Basic IT knowledge, including experience with NHS IT systems.
  • Full UK/EU/EEA driving licence.
Additional Preferences
  • Prescribing Level 10.
  • Clinical decision‑making Level 10.
  • Relevant expert practice in respiratory specialty.
  • Recent contribution to service planning and redesign projects.
  • Ability to plan and organise workload autonomously within NHSL policies.
  • Ability to work flexibly with multidisciplinary teams and across professional boundaries.
  • Monitoring effectiveness through quality assurance strategies such as audit, peer review, and clinical supervision.
  • Awareness of national and local healthcare policies.
  • Ability to undertake Specialist Clinics under NHSL policies.
