Emergency Medical Technician

Position Summary:

Under the general direction of the Chief of Operations and Operations Supervisor’s, the EMT has responsibility for the safe operation of all LHRS vehicles in accord with Pennsylvania motor code and the delivery of optimum patient care in accord with the EMS Act of 1985 (Act 45) and all regional guideline’s/protocols.

Education:

High School Graduate or equivalent (GED)
Successful completion of the State of Pennsylvania EMT Training Program

Experience:

Minimum of one (1) year continuous and verifiable EMT experience with an emergency response ambulance service.

Licensure/Certification :

Certification by the State of Pennsylvania as an EMTValid motor vehicle operators licenseCPR health care provider certification meeting ARC or AHA Standards Successful completion of PHTLS and/or BTLS courseEVOC – Emergency Vehicle Operations Course Successful Completion or a Hazardous Materials R& I class

Competencies:

Verbally communicate in person and via telephone and telecommunications using the English Language Hear spoken information from co-workers, patient’s, physicians, dispatchers and sounds common to the emergency scene.

Lift, carry and balance a minimum or 125 pounds equally distributed (250) pounds with assistance, a height of 22 inches and a distance of 10 feet.

Read and comprehend written materials under stressful conditions.

Verbally interview patient, family members and bystanders and hear their responses.

Document physically, in writing, all relevant information In prescribed formal.

Demonstrate manual dexterity and line motor skills, with ability to perform all tasks related to quality patient care.

Bend, stoop, crawl and walk on uneven surfaces.

Meet minimum vision requirements to operate a motor vehicle within the state of Pennsylvania.

Function in varied environmental conditions such as lighted or darkened work area, extreme heat, cold, and moisture.

Interpret written, oral and diagnostic forms or instruction

Perform in situations that create stress and tension on a regular basis.

Other Requirements:

Must have thorough current knowledge of medical/traumatic assessment, treatment and protocols. Be capable of performing all EMT basic skills and using BLS  able to perform in accordance with all behavioral objectives of the BLS curriculum approved by the Department of health and other objectives identified by the Department.

Must follow the rules and regulations of the LHRS employee manual

Understands that consumption or alcohol beverages or use of illegal substances while working or under the influence of such while working will result in immediate suspension of duties and possible termination pending the results of an investigation.

Agrees to allowing blood/urine to be drawn and tested to prove or disprove the use of illegal substances or alcohol if there if reasonable and documented suspicion of such.

Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with fellow employees, hospital staff, BLS units, fire and rescue units, police departments, communication centers, management. QRS Services, neighboring ALS units and the general public.

Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Must be able to teach, supervise, and direct the work of students, EMT’s and BLS crews.

Must be able to handle conflict situations with good judgment, professionalism and courtesy.

Receives call from PSAP, verbally acknowledges the call, reads road maps, identifies the most expeditious route to the scene and observes traffic ordinances and regulations.

Upon arrival at the scene, insures that the vehicle is parked in a safe location; performs size-up to determine scene safety, mechanism of injury or illness, determines…
