MDH Washington County Health Department, Hagerstown MD

Main Purpose of Job

This position will function as the Environmental Health Director for the Washington County Health Department’s Environmental Health Bureau for the protection of public health through an effective regulatory, inspection and education program for public health.

The Environmental Health Director will manage, direct and supervise program managers, evaluate quality controls, interpret environmental health statutes and regulations concerning food service facilities, well and septic, community services, complaints, plan review, inspections and re-inspections to ensure compliance. The position will collaborate with other Health Department Units within Washington County and statewide; serve on the MACO EH Directors Committee; collaborate with federal, state and local organizations to foster and promote public health.

The position will also manage and assist staff in achieving cross-training in the food service, well and septic, and community service programs.

This position is considered Emergency Essential and must manage and respond to after-hours communications as part of the regular on-call rotation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Qualified candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in biological, physical, environmental science or chemistry, and six (6) years of experience involving inspections and investigations in the field of environmental health or closely related environmental health experience, including two (2) years in a supervisory capacity.

A master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Public Health or Environmental Health Science can substitute for one year of the non-supervisory experience.

THIS RECRUITMENT IS LIMITED TO CURRENT EMPLOYEES OF THE MARYLAND DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH'S WASHINGTON COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Candidates for positions in this classification must possess and maintain a current license or be eligible to obtain licensure as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist from the Maryland Board of Environmental Health Specialists.
