Job DescriptionEDUCATIONAL INTERPRETER (sign language) (1022.11AR)
Minimum Qualifications- High school diploma or GED
- Must hold a minimum of a Temporary License issued by the Kentucky Board of Interpreters for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing per KRS under 201 KAR 39:070
- Meet Continuing Education Requirements per 201 KAR 39:090
- Obtain assessment level of Intermediate Plus or higher on the Sign Communication Proficiency Interview (SCPI); OR score at least 2.75 on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) or other recognized assessment by the Kentucky Board of Interpreters for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing for K-12 settings
- One (1) year experience interpreting in an education setting or working in the deaf community with supporting documentation, or graduation from an Interpreter Training Program
Supervising Teacher(s);
Principal, Director of Exceptional Children Services
Interpreting and/or transliterating English and signed concepts to specialized vocabulary used by students, staff, or visitors in educational settings, including but not limited to American Sign Language, English-based sign language, cued speech, and oral transliterating. Serve as an integral member of the educational team serving students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing according to their IEP. This includes interpreting in classrooms, labs, field trips, assemblies, and other educational sites.
KnowledgeAnd Abilities
Knowledge of:
- American Sign Language, Signed English, Signed Exact English, and other recognized modes of communication used within the deaf and hard-of-hearing community
- Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary
- Core content/curriculum basics
- Values, behaviors, and language of the American Deaf culture
- Legal rights of the deaf and hard-of-hearing
- Interpreter Code of Ethics (KRS , 201 KAR 39:120)
Ability to:
- Facilitate communication between deaf/hard-of-hearing students and others including faculty, staff, administrators, students, or visitors
- Interpret spoken English for deaf and hard-of-hearing students, faculty, staff, or visitors
- Work independently with some direction
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships
- Use recognized interpreting/transliterating skills to facilitate communication
- Attend classes with students to interpret lectures and classroom activities
- Interpret at meetings, conferences, field trips, assemblies, and other educational activities
- Utilize planning time for meetings with teachers and staff
- Prepare for demanding course material as needed
- Participate in professional development
- Perform other duties related to communication accessibility, ensuring they do not interfere with student communication needs
Based on 185 contract days, 7.5 hours per day, on the board-approved salary schedule. Adopted June 18, 2004; revised October 30, 2014, August 3, 2015, March 1, 2021.
